Costs vary
We were quoted €100 by our tour operator but paid Q80 which is about €9
The company met us by our vacation rental with another 12 in our party
The vehicle was comfortable

Shop around for best price

The journey took 1.5 hrs each way
And the climb in the morning took 4 hours
Dogs at bottom & one accompanied us
Walking sticks sold by local boys came in useful but they want them back when you return to base
The climb was manageable - fairly strenuous but with my average fitness I found it exhilarating (in my early 60's with hip replacement)
We toasted marshmallows in the volcanos hot vents & walked on warm ash.

Caldera was with in our eyesight but not accessible these days for regular tours
The views of Antigua were obstructed by Agua volcano but otherwise the views are breathtaking

Would recommend this tour

Enjoyed the half day trip here. Steep climb, and tour guide goes pretty fast but rest stops along the way up. Interesting seeing the change in terrain from lush greenery to black ash. Roasted marshmallows (guide provided). Beautiful seeing the sunset on the way back. Guide was in Spanish but spoke a bit of English to fill us in.

We took a budget tour ($15 through our hotel) and hiked it up Pacaya. I'd call it a moderate challenge -- totally fine for fit hikers, but maybe a bit tough for older people or folks who haven't exercised much recently. There's no lava right now, but there's plenty of smoke. It's awe-inspiring and worthwhile.

Make sure to do the afternoon session. Take a flashlight and warm clothing and insist on waiting after sunset- that's when we stood in awe at the lava glowing red and erupting from the top! The hike was the easiest in central America. All of our group (from mid twenties to mid 60's, varying fitness, smokers/non-smokers) managed with no issue. The guides walk you up at a snails pace with regular breaks. It was one of the highlights of my trip though central America :)

Great hike, awesome views of the peak and valley/Guatemala City. Sweet local kids, horses and dogs! Side trip to lake cauldera nice too.
