“My return to the Aurora Hotel”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

I first visited Guatemala eighteen years ago and stayed at Hotel Aurora with my wife and my daughter who was serving in Guatemala as a Peace Corps volunteer. We were all impressed by the overall quality of the establishment from the standpoint of comfort, friendliness of staff, security and value. I have returned many times since then and always stay at Hotel Aurora if Antigua is on my itinerary.

They were very accommodating. We stayed for a very short period of time and left a five a.m. The night stay were willing to get up to let us know our taxi had arrived. The beds are amazing and extremely comfortable. Hot showers, cable television, good location. My only complaint is the Internet. It was extremely weak and only worked if I was directly at the door. Maybe if I had asked the staff to reset it, it might have worked. Otherwise for the price its great

I stayed here two nights. It was perfect. The staff was hospitable, the room large and clean, the courtyard pretty, location perfect, breakfast ok. Although their English is probably great, they respected my wish to speak only Spanish. I would easily stay again.

The staff are nice. The garden is pretty. The breakfast free but if you order more they charge extra- fair enough but I thought fried eggs disproportionately expensive for Guatemala-maybe they came from aristocratic hens. To get enough air you have to open the upper louvres. Sadly for us some rather rude non-Hispanic guests camped on the sofa just outside our window smoking cigarettes, going on their wifi and noisily talking in English. The smoke came into the room with that unpleasant tobacco smell that we non-smokers find unbearable. My wife and I could not even talk to each other; since we heard every word clearly, obviously they would be able to hear us -absolutely NO PRIVACY in that regard. It made the 2 night stay exceedingly unpleasant. I respectfully, humbly and as deferentially as possible, suggest that management put notices in the courtyard to advise people to respect the privacy and comfort of other guests. It was unbearable for us- that is if it is OK for us to have this opinion. I believe the hotel is very over rated by some people. But they have a right to their opinion as we all have. It is called free speech; you may also be free to disturb others with your free speech- but it is inconsiderate to do so when within feet of paying guests in their own room whom one would think have a right to a reasonable amount of privacy?

This hotel is a special treat. From the outside it doesn't look like much but once inside you see a courtyard with a fountain and hundreds of plants, flowers and birds. Surrounding this square within, are the hotel rooms. They are beautifully furnished, huge, clean and very comfortable. We only stayed one night on our way back to the airport, but it was a great treat. Wonderful breakfast and you almost feel like Dorothy opening up your door in the morning to see a world of color.

Room Tip: If you're a light sleeper request a room in the back away from the reception desk, which is loca...

Stayed here only one night. The place feels like it's in a time warp in a good way. Lovely garden around which the rooms are situated. There are many places to sit outdoors and relax. Room was very clean and comfortable. There was a mix up with me getting the wrong bag from a van driver. The staff could not have been more wonderful - made at least 8 calls to straighten it out.
Noise was a problem. The rooms get no air if you close window and door. A small window opens above the door but can be noisey if you are near the desk. Otherwise, this place was gorgeous. Nice breakfast too.

Room Tip: Get a room at the back of the hotel to avoid noise.

We arrived in Antigua really late at night, completely exhausted after a bus trip from Honduras and were greeted with the news that despite booking a room with two beds they didn't have one. The guy on the desk really wasn't helpful and offered to book us in at another hotel (it was 11pm) but after sitting there refusing to leave they 'found' us a room with two beds. It was all very odd. The other issue was the rooms - they have windows (some of them open) facing the courtyard and from early in the morning, guests and a lot of staff walk the paths talking really loudly. IF you're looking for a romantic getaway with sleep ins, this is not the place to be. The hotel itself is really pretty and well maintained, but I was really unimpressed considering the glowing nature of some of the other reviews on this site. It's also much more pricey than other comparative places to stay.
