Owner description: Destroyed twice by earthquakes, this 1548 church was rebuilt in the 1700s to withstand earthquakes and boasts a lovely yellow façade and a huge stone fountain, reputed to be the largest in Central America.

You will need to pay a bit to go to the roof top but that is the best attraction for this place. Do not expect to see an European church. From the roof top, the view of Antigua gives you a totally different dimension.

Ruins were just so-so. Went to photograph it at night, but only the right side was lit up. Very pretty, functioning church.

Antigua's not really about any great individual architectural features, Antigua is about strolling the streets of a historic colonial town and soaking the place up as a whole. La Merced would go almost unnoticed in many other locations, but if you're looking for a few individual places you should visit whilst here, La Merced is one of them. The church itself has been well restored and it plus the ruins next door feel well cared for. Just don't expect too much. It gets 4 blobs in the context of Guatemala, not in the context of the world.

Weekends are filled with local vendors in front. Nice peaceful little area to hangout and rest. Nice place, a little bit away from el parque central so you get away from some of the tourists at least.

I almost skipped this because I didn't realize that in addition to the current functioning church there is also a ruined courtyard which was beautiful. Best part is climbing up to the second floor balcony area which offered gorgeous views of Antigua.
