Owner description: Destroyed twice by earthquakes, this 1548 church was rebuilt in the 1700s to withstand earthquakes and boasts a lovely yellow façade and a huge stone fountain, reputed to be the largest in Central America.

La Merced stands at the north end of 5a Avenida. It is the yellow church with white detailing. You can enter during most times of the day. Don't miss the congregation's Jesus and Mary statues that they carry through the streets on huge floats held by 30-50 people during Holy Week.

Very nice church and the walk to it from the main square was filled with neat shops and sights. The church is a good example of a building on it's scale to survive an earthquake and very good for photos.

This amazing yellow church is a must, don't forget the convent in the back. If you like architecture this is the place to be.

It is possibly the most photographed church in Antigua. I take many photos of it every time I am in Antigua. The church is beautiful inside and out.

We stayed very close to La Merced and passed it by, enjoying the park nearby. We didn't realize until near the end of our trip that there were beautiful ruins and an interesting museum beside the active church. Very much worth a visit.
