We had been told that this property was amazing but still were not prepared for how special Casa Santo Domingo is. Even though our room was probably one of the more ordinary ones, it was huge. The back wall of our room appeared to be part of the former monastery. When we visited a suite, it was massive. Santo Domingo is one of the most significant sights to see in Antigua. In addition to having rebuild some of the old church and monastery that was destroyed by earthquake hundreds of years ago, the property also houses a variety of museums. There were also some weddings held there on the weekend - so hundreds of candles were lit on the way to the church part of the property. We attended a conference held at Santo Domingo and found it a great location for this event. Our breakfast was included with the room price. The buffet was good but their coffee could use improvement.

There are hidden gems throughout the grounds. Little museums of silver, paintings and art. A wedding was being set up for and they covered a fountain with candles. The restaurant had a great buffet. Service was great, except for at the pool. (The drinks took ages to come out and the glasses had black dirt, as if they had been stored new and gathering dust on the floor.) As you walk throughout the property, there are flowers hanging everywhere. The hotel is located in a fairly central location.

On the downs
Value factor is low when compared to some other luxurious hotels in Antigua. The bathrooms were dark, but spacious. The door in the shower did not keep water from seeping out to the floor. The floor flooded and we had to keep towels on the floor to keep it dry. The tile in the bath looked a little moldy. We stayed in the Estacia Conventual Deluxe. Our room did not have a balcony, although comparable rooms did (our friends stayed there on the same floor, same room type). At the pool, the drinks took ages to come out and the glasses had black dirt, as if they had been stored new and gathering dust on the floor.

The hotel is open to visitors, but I think payment is required to visit the museums. I'd stay here again, but it wouldn't be my first option.

Room Tip: Get a room with a balcony to get more light in your room

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your comments. We are pleased to know you enjoyed our buffet and service overall. In many bathrooms of our rooms, there are antique tiles installed (part of our collection) but will look into the matter. If you give us the opportunity of staying with us again, pls contact me directly at: igomez@casasantodomingo.com.gt, so I can reserve a room to your entire liking.

Incredible experience if you like the idea of staying in a heritage site. You will give up on some of the modern conveniences but will be better for the experience. If you are the type of person who woukd want to stay in a castle when you visit Scotland and the old town when you visit Jeruselum - the this is your spot - enough said.

The grounds of this hotel/museum are beautiful and the amenities are top noch. The service and staff were all very professional and helpful as well and the location is convenient to all things in Antigua. The rooms however feel very dark and a bit dated. The beds and linens are very comfortable and clean and the room sizes are nice but the carpet shows a lot of wear and tear with some staining. The bathroom also was very dark and needed some attention to mold in the calk around the tub. Overall a very nice place, but the rooms could use a bit of attention to match the quality and beauty of the grounds.

My husband and I recently returned from a visit to Antigua Guatemala and stayed at Casa Santo Domingo. It is a hidden treasure! Built from the ruins of a 1500's convent. There is a museum on the grounds right behind the pool. The walkways are covered in a hanging latticework of flowers. Your walk around the grounds and to and from your room is beautiful. I didn't take advantage of the spa, but friends of mine that did said it was the best massage they have ever had. The breakfast at the restaurant on site is wonderful, especially the made to order omelette. Another advantage to the hotel is it is within walking distance to a lot of restaurants and shops in Antigua. The central park is a short 10-15 minute walk away. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I would love to stay here again and again! Thanks!

Room Tip: If you can, ask for a room with a little balcony. We didn't realize they had balconies because we booked with a conference, and I'm not sure if there is a premium on it, but that would have been great.
