“This would be a one-star if it weren't for the grounds.”
Reviewed June 2, 2012

Having been in Guatemala over 20 times in the past three years, I have had occasion to stay at the CSD and eat there several times. The bottom line is this: the rooms, with the exception of the fireplaces and balconies, do not even meet Hampton Inn standards; the wireless is spotty and overpriced ($15), and the service is desultory. Bathrooms are dingy and magnets for foot rot (see other posters' reviews) and lightbulbs are so low wattage you almost want to take up a collection for Con Ed to come visit. Gym is terrific -- never again will I be on a treadmill facing bougainvillea and ancient walls! -- and food is okay. Grounds are wonderful, but beware the wedding guests: they are loud, drunk, and tolerated by management since this is their cash cow. Also, as other guests have posted, beware the unauthorized charges on your bill; peruse it with a gimlet eye before you sign on the dotted line. One word of warning that is beyond the hotel's control: The CSD is on the outskirts of town. Antigua is not the safe haven it used to be; take a tuk-tuk after dark and even in daylight hours, be aware of who is within your line of vision.

Room Tip: Put in writing a room request before your trip, specifying that you do not want a below ground room...

I was not a hotel guest, but did eat in the restaurant and visit the museums. The food was excellent and reasonably priced considering the star rating of the hotel. Restaurant staff were helpful, spoke good english and were very efficient. The museum (or collection of museums) was also fascinating and well worth the 40 quitzales. You could easily spend an afternoon here - start with lunch and then slowly work your way through the museums and galleries.

Beautiful hotel set up in an old monastery: it looks like a museum, yet don't you worry - you will have all modern comforts. It is simply gorgeous. The only downside is that you do not feel like going out of the hotel premises to explore the lovely town of Antigua... once you are inside Casa Santo Domingo, you just feel like chilling out there, the spa, the pool...

We are still here choosing to stay an additional night rather than travel to Guatemala City. The common areas in this hotel are amazing. Great breaKfast buffet and I seldom eat breakfast. Pool, ruins, excellent museums on site. You can tell ownership put huge amounts of money into this place. Everything was tasteful & understated. Landscaping & fountains stunning. The rooms are very comfortable. Nice toiletries. Lots of hot water. The staff could not be more accommodating. That said the carpets in the rooms were filthy. Stayed here w family. My sister in law commented on the carpet. I put on socks and they were filthy after a short time. My husband the scientist made me wear flip flops in the room for the remainder of the trip.

Almost always Casa Santo Domingo is the only 5-star hotel in Guatemala listed in the "World's Best" for most magazines. This place does not disappoint. The setting is magnificent as it has been built surrounding the ruins of an ancient monestary/convent. It is stunning during the day and even more so in the evening as they light the place with candles. Flowers abound. The spa was excellent and they even accomodated me during the limited time slot I had on this business trip. Only had a problem with wireless internet in the rooms. Antiqua is isolated and has few internet options.

The descriptions are on their website don't do it justice...and most is well understated. One of my colleagues, however, said it best when he said "99% of Guatemalan girls dream of having their wedding here."
I'd go back for a romantic trip myself.

We stayed at the amazing Casa Santo Domingo during Holy Week. This place is unreal. We like staying at places like this, hotels with history. The grounds are very lovely & the view of the mountains from the patio is mesmerizing. We ate at the restaurant for two lunches and breakfast everyday. The food was outstanding. The pool was fantastic! Nice and warm so that you could stay in there awhile. We really want to come back again next year for Holy Week but want to stay at the hotel a little longer, maybe a few days before or afterwards so that we can more fully enjoy what this hotel offers.
