“Refined and Gracious”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2006

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Antigua for 3 nights in January 2006. The hotel is part of the four-star La Porta chain, and certainly lives up to its ranking. It is on a side street about four short blocks from the main square, within easy walking distance along shop-lined streets. The main section of the hotel is laid out in typical colonial style – a walled entrance (which gives absolutely no clue as to what is inside) leads to an inner courtyard and a beautiful open-air lobby with a Spanish-style fountain, veranda lined with plants, flowers, etc. A terrace restaurant (where an extensive breakfast buffet is served) looks out to the pool area, gardens, and one of the nearby volcanoes in the distance.

Rooms are arranged hacienda-style around the inner courtyard either in the main complex, or across the lane in a quieter courtyard complex. Both are very attractive settings. Our room was across the lane. It was large, with beautiful wood flooring and paneling in the sleeping area and equally beautiful cream and brown local tiles in the bathroom. The sleeping area was attractively furnished with a desk, armoire, and built-in luggage stand. The bathroom was very large with plenty of counter space and all the amenities of a four-star hotel.
The front desk staff was efficient, friendly, and helpful.
The only negatives to this otherwise charming place are that some rooms can be noisy from street traffic (ours wasn’t, but it might be wise to ask for a quiet room), people walking by have a rather good view into the room unless the shutters are closed, which cuts down air circulation and light, and the sleeping area was dark due to a lack of lamps and overhead lighting.

We were supposed to stay at Casa Santo Domingo but due to overbooking were bumped and sent here. The hotel though not quite as beautiful as the Casa is quite charming with a very nice pool in the center adequate for lap swimming and warm since it is heated. The staff were all excellent especially the dining room staff. The food in the hotel was very good especially the morning hot chocolate with water only!! The room was slightly small for the 3 of us and I would recommend the slightly larger deluxe rooms for only $20.00 more. The hotel was also quiet at night and only 3 long blocks from the Plaza. A nice alternative to the much busier Casa which we saw. It had the feeling of an old world colonial resort. We enjoyed our stay. If you do sight seeing avoid Clark Tours as they are unreliable.

More than a little bit of paradise hidden behind the usual concrete façades that one finds in Antigua, Guatemala. Very beautiful grounds, including swimming pool, outdoor restaurant, and chatty birds. Wonderful room w/ own private terrace and fireplace. Especially enjoyed the buffet breakfast served in the open air restaurant - featuring 2 chefs and an extraordinary variety of Latin American tastes. Lots of fresh fruit and juices. Excellent location. Close to square, shopping, and other treasures unique to Guatemala. So glad we spent our last evening in Guatemala here. Wish I could go back tomorrow.

We stayed at the Porta Hotel Antigua from March 23-28, 2005 (Semana Santa). We were very pleased. Our room, #314, had two double beds and was quite large, about 12x18 feet. It had a fireplace, but we never needed it for heat. The bathroom was about 5x12, and had a tub. There is a fairly large pool in the park-like courtyard, which was very popular with our daughters and other kids. The buffet breakfast was very good, with lots of fresh fruit, pastries, made to order omelets, and other goodies. The service was impeccable. The hotel is three blocks south of the Plaza Mayor, so it is very easy to walk anywhere in town. Our room was $150/night for four people, including breakfast. Rates were higher than usual because of Semana Santa. I recommend it, especially if you have kids, because of the pool.

We loved the Hotel Antigua! My husband has been going there with his family since he was a kid and I can see why. The grounds and pool area are beautiful. Our room and bathroom were spacious and clean. Beds were comfortable with nice linens. We had very good food and friendly service in the restaurant and the bar. We definitely felt that we got our money's worth and recommend this hotel to others.
