“Terrible - not clean and loud 24/7”
Reviewed December 9, 2013 via mobile

We arrived and our private room had little cockroaches all over the bed, our bedroom light didn't work and the music was vibrating through the walls. We love to party but like to come back to a clean room and be able to go to sleep when we want. I will say that the lady at the front desk was incredibly helpful and apologetic when we asked her to help us find a new hotel at 10.30pm at night (after we had decided enough was enough!) she called around and got us somewhere down the road. Don't know how this place is so high on trip advisor.

Accept our apologies that our hostel did not meet your expectations. We pride ourselves in keeping a clean hostel. On occasion, a guest with bring with them " unwanted guest" so to speak from other places. I do find your assertions that there were roaches crawling all over your bed suspect at best. I imagine this was a bit of an exaggeration. We pay to have the place cleaned on a regular basis to avoid the allegation which you have complained of in your review. We do so at considerable expense.

We are so high on Trip Adviser because we run a great hostel. We received an award from Hostel World for best Hostel in Guatemala in 2013, because, once again, we run a great hostel. Your experience, at best, was an outlier, an unusual one if you will.

The lady with whom you spoke is Maggie, one of the owners of the hostel. I happy to see that she could find accommodations so late in the evening. This proves my point. We take care of our guest regardless of the situation and that is why we are so high on Trip Adviser.

Lastly, as to the music. We do have a bar on the third floor. it is unclear which room you were staying in, or better put, attempted to stay in, but the walls are constructed of thick concrete which make vibration difficult to conceive of to be sure. At any rate, we normally close the bar down at 10:00 to 10:30 depending on the crowd or night. We do so in order to ensure that our guest who have plans early in the morning are afforded an opportunity to get some rest.

We wish you safe travels.

This is not the place for you unless you are a 20-something student interested in partying, getting wasted and meet just other students. You will not get a good night sleep, because so many people come in and out all the time, they scream loudly in the hall, they will be drunk at 4 am and try to open doors. The hostel is falling apart - let me not mention the hygiene of the bathroom, the shower which you will be sharing with many people, the non-existent quality of the mattress (unless you like feeling springs on your back while you sleep), the tiny cramped room, the synthetic linens etc. Gosh I am so glad we are leaving today.

Room Tip: If you want a good room, go somewhere else!

Obviously, we are disappointed that you were displeased with your stay with us. It appears you were displeased with several aspects of our hostel. Your initial compliant is that “unless you are a 20-something student interested in partying, getting wasted and just meet other students you will not get a good night sleep.” Our demographic is geared toward the 20-something students whom you complain. That is not to say that others are not welcome. We are an all-inclusive and welcome all age groups, nationalities, and “walks of life “in general.

That said, we do maintain a festive atmosphere that is conducive to people interacting and they often party at our bar on the terrace as well as other places in Antigua. We do not have a curfew, but we do have someone at the desk 24 hours a day. If a guest becomes too wild, we will arrange for them to stay elsewhere. We are not a daycare nor are we a day spa.
We take exception to the notion that our hostel is falling apart. That is just patently false. We paint rooms on a regular basis, we just bought new bunk beds for one room and have plans to update other beds as well. You might want to consider a different type of accommodation in the future, perhaps an upscale hotel. There are plenty in Antigua to choose from to be sure, albeit, at a price point much different from what we offer. Lastly, as to the bathroom those are cleaned on a regular basis. We even have plans to bring additional help on days where we have additional activity. We are a popular hostel and the restrooms do get quite a bit of use. In closing, we think that your expectations were out of line with what a successful hostel has to offer.

Note we were voted best hostel in Guatemala in 2013 by Hostel World and received a Certificate of Excellence from Trip Adviser. We suspect that this is more reflective of what we are than what you attempted to portray in your review. We wish you good luck in finding accommodations that better suit your particular needs.

Stayed here over the Halloween weekend in a private double.. Which was ok quality but not the best value for money compared to similar rooms in other hostels in the area (which were fully booked all weekend). Expected it to be a bit of a party hostel but didn't expect the terrace bar to be quite so noisy all though the day - the room was right underneath the bar and kitchen so we could hear the music and boxes and bottles being dragged around from 8am til midnight, not great if you needed a power nap (which we did after a nasty night bus down) or wanted to sleep in at all. Lots of locals or people from other hostels seemed to visit the bar and they tended to hog the upstairs bathroom (one of only three for the whole hostel) when they were around. The showers were a little tricky to get the hang of but they were mostly pretty clean during our time there. Staff were fab in helping with shuttles and food recommendations and were great in letting me use the shower before my room was ready for check in. Breakfast was good though would be great if you got a free drink with it too.. Charging extra for tea or coffee seemed a bit off. Free drinking water though so that was a plus. An ok hostel for what we needed but definitely nicer ones in town.

Thank you for your time in composing your comment. As you mentioned, you stayed during the Halloween weekend and you accurately described the position of the room as it relates to the layout of the hostel. We are a very popular hostel with not only our guests, but with expats and locals as well. We actually have four bathrooms, but when we are busy, such as the time you stayed with us it can cause some wait times. We do thank you for pointing out that we allowed you to use our facilities before you checked in.

We try our best to accommodate all our guest regardless of whether they are staying with us or not. That, we believe, is part of the appeal of our hostel which no doubt had some part in our earning the recognition as best Hostel in 2013 in Guatemala by Hostel World as well as a Certificate of Excellence from Trip Adviser in the same year.

As to our staff, we are very proud of them and feel they do a great job everyday. I can not speak to whether there exist better bargains in Antigua or not as we strive to be the best hostel we can each day and we feel confident that we are achieving that goal.

Thank you for staying with us and your input was appreciated.

Best Regards,

Steven

I arrived late and the hostel was very accommodating. The dorm was cramped and in average condition, and the bathrooms fairly standard, but what a view to wake up to! (with my free breakfast) - It was my first impression of Antigua and it has lasted.

I know they offer quite a few activites (like a monday pub crawl) but i wasn't around long enough to experience them.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your comment on your experience at our hostel. Our hostel was converted into its current form from a colonial home. Each room is different, which, in our opinion, lends to the charm and experience. We do update our rooms with fresh paint and deep cleaning on a regular basis. We recently purchased new bunk beds for one of rooms just yesterday to maximize the space that our guest share.

We love the view as well, and we are happy that we had an opportunity to share this with you. Safe travels.

Best,

Steven

I have enjoyed my stay at The Terrace Hostel! First of all you consider staying at The Terrace is for the view. Antigua is beautiful for its historical look and the surrounding volcanos. From The Terrace you can look at the precious nature jewel volcano Aqua and the remaining two as well while sipping a tasty cuba libre for Q10 at an extensive happy hour.
The stuff at The Terrace was great with great partys and I guess in Antigua is every time something going on! The rooms are smaller though. We stayed at a 4 bed dorm. The hostel space is divided into two levels with 2 showers altogether so better 'shot gun' your shower time ;-)
See you next time The Terrace!!!

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Its the best way to find out if we need to make any improvements. Rooms do vary in sizes as this property was converted from a home. As to showers we have one the first floor and two on the second. Granted one of the showers is located in a private room. Given that we are not a huge hostel and the various sleeping habits of our guest, the wait times for showers are normally not an issue.

Once again, thank you for choosing the terrace and your kind words regarding our staff.

Best,

Steven and the Terrace Staff

The stay here was nice. I stayed in a private room with private bathroom and I had no problem at all. My friends stayed in a 4 person dorm and the problem was that the room was really small and it was humid. The shared bathrooms where not that well cleaned but for a backpacker it is fine. The terrace was really nice, without this I don't think I will go back to this hostel.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Your comments are very helpful. We are happy you enjoyed your stay in the private. As to the dorm room, we have to deal with the elements during rainy season. The combination of heat and rain produces humidty. HVAC units are nearly non existent in the highlands of Guatemala. We do have fans available for guest use.

Restrooms are cleaned a couple times a day by our staff. And, they are cleaned more often when we have more patrons which is often the case. Once again, thank you for your review.
