“Must be one of the best in Antigua based on service alone!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 14, 2013

My wife spent a fleeting two nights at this excellent hotel located just a stone's throw from the central square. We were given a room allocated to us despite the fact we arrived late into the night due to a delayed flight. The next morning we were told by the excellent Marco that a long standing client of the hotel had booked the room were in a long time ago and that he was due to arrive that day so they had to relocate us to another room. This caused us some inconvenience, and though the day progressed I cannot recall seeing a new resident in the room we left? Maybe management can comment on this.
On the plus side, the hotel has a beautiful central courtyard covered in lush tropical plants and flowers. The King size bed was the best we have slept in any hotel around the world. Mayra and Helena were exceptionally attentive and helpful housekeeping. Mayra cleared up a disastrous accident I had whereby my negligence caused the whole breakfast to be spilt on the room floor! With the minimum of fuss she cleared it up.
The hotel is small and cosy. If you can afford the premium rates, this is a little oasis in the middle of buzzing Antigua!

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the adjacent main rood that leads to the central square. That side is a bit...

The Hotel staff are sorry for the inconvenience we caused by moving you to another room.

The reason for this was that your original room had been booked by someone else for a seven

day period and specifically asked for that room.

Thanks to TripAdvisor our team realized we fulfill your expectations and hope to have the

opportunity to serve you again in a near future.

Best regards,

Marina S.

La Catedral is a lovely boutique hotel with just about the best location imaginable in Antigua (it is just off the Central Park). It is an easy task to walk anywhere in town. The rooms are quiet and comfortable. All the rooms face an interior courtyard (in the traditional colonial/hacienda style) which is a great place to sit, relax, drink coffee, and eat the delicious breakfast (so many choices and so well prepared and served!). As for the staff, they are an exceptional group - friendly and helpful. They made me feel like I was at home. I would not hesitate to return and hope to do so soon!

I’ve spend 11 nights in two different rooms there on my recent Guatemalan Adventure and I was absolutely thrilled !! The hotel is a quiet oasis just off the Parque Central, so location-wise it’ doesn’t get any better in Antigua. With only 8 rooms inside an old colonial building you feel more like at home than in a hotel. The whole place is wonderfully decorated with antiques and beautiful knick-knacks. The sofas with lots of cushions and blankets in the courtyard invite you to relax and having your ( free and included ) breakfast served in the gorgeous lush garden in the morning is the best way to start your perfect day in Antigua. There’s about a good dozen choices on the menu for breakfast and everything tastes great.

Marco, the manager, is a wonderful guy who will help you in any way he can and the girls are just adorable too. The entire staff does everything to make you feel at home. The size of just 8 rooms, the personal touch in decorations of the whole place and the absolutely wonderful adorable staff really makes you feel like home – and to plan your next trip back here as soon as you leave !! I chose this hotel based on all the great Tripadvisor recommendations and I can confirm that each 5 star review is totally deserved. This is definitely one of the best hotels I’ve stayed in in all of Guatemala and also especially because of the perfect location, I’ll never choose another hotel in Antigua again as it couldn’t possibly be any better.

We spent several weeks online scouting places to stay for our trip to Antigua a few weeks ago, and the reviews--and reasonable prices--brought us invariably to Hotel la Catedral. It is not the most expensive or most luxurious hotel in the city, I'm sure, but you'll be hard-pressed to feel more at home, more welcomed and more relaxed than right here! With 24-hour attendance at the door, we felt incredibly safe, and also warmly welcomed each time we came and left. The hotel is located barely two blocks from the central park/plaza, as well, so you're within a few minutes on foot of countless attractions and restaurants. The breakfasts were delicious, and dining outdoors around the gorgeous courtyard garden, and in Antigua's wonderful weather, was priceless. They also have a bar attached to the courtyard, and you can order beers and other drinks to be served inside the bar area or while lounging on their chairs around the garden. (We spent several evenings chatting with Oscar, the bartender, about sports as he gently corrected our Spanish and offered his suggestions for beer and their local rum specialty, Ron Zacapa, which is sensational. Oscar was so professional and so friendly; the whole experience was fantastic.)

As to the language, if, like many, you want to practice your Spanish in Guatemala, you'll find loads of patience and friendly help at la Catedral. In fact, we had no idea Marco spoke much English until he said goodbye to us in perfect English, after four days of him letting us stumble through and practice as much Spanish as possible (which we wanted to do). That's the kind of personal touch you'll find here. Very memorable.

They'll also help set up other excursions in and around Antigua, and we let them arrange a volcano hike and a massage nearby. For the hike, the ride showed up promptly at 6 a.m., and Antonio had even set out a carafe of coffee at 5:45 a.m. to make sure we got off with a buzz (and also packed a sack lunch to go, including a sandwhich, apple and cookies!). Everything they arranged, including a ride back to Guatemala City at 4 a.m. to fly home, happened on the minute scheduled. They were waiting for us when we arrived in Guatemala City at 6 a.m., as well, with my name on a sign.

We could gush for days, and by the end, we felt like friends, not just visitors or hotel guests. Can't recommend it highly enough!

Room Tip: We stayed in a King mini-suite, #4, with a lovely bed and great bathroom. It is on the street side...

If you are looking at this post is because you are contemplating staying at La Catedral Hotel and I am here to tell you to look no further.
My adult son and I just got back from a month stay at this charming place and we both want to rank La Catedral #1. As world travelers, we have been to Bed and Breakfast to 5 Stars Hotels. Never before have we been treated like royalty like we were treated at La Catedral. We were in tears when we left this paradise of a place and that was due to the warmth shown to us by all the great staff. Marco made sure that all our needs were met by providing all the necessary arrangements for any activities and tours that we requested. He guided us to the best restaurants in town and was always available to assist us in any way, shape or form.
I fell ill during our first week there (due to something I ate at a local resturant that did not agree with me) and Beatriz, Elena and Mayra were taking care of me like my personal nurses. All three were making sure that I was hydrated by providing me with medicinal herbal teas. Made me special blend breakfasts that soothed my stomach and kept me well nourished.
This Hotel is so immaculate that you could literally eat off the floor. We stayed in a room that faces the main street and there was absolutely no noise. Our room (#4) was very comfortable, spacious and no complaints about the hot water issue, we had plenty of hot water. One thing we did not have was a complaint about maintenace, everything was perfect.
It was a little bit humid in Antigua and even though there is no A/C in the room, we had a floor fan that kept the room at a comfortable temperature.
I would like to clarify a couple of issues as far as the laundry is concerned:
If you were to order a Pizza from an outside provider, you would ask Marco to make the phone call for you and upon receiving the pizza, you would be expected to pay and not impose those charges on the hotel and deal with that when you check out. The same thing goes for the laundry services. These services are done by an outside provider, it has nothing to do with La Catedral, therefore, the only thing that Marco does is call the provider, they pick up your clothes in the morning and they are returned in the afternoon washed, folded and for an extra charge they could be ironed. The price is Q.6.00 ($0.78) per lb. For 90.00 Quetzales ($11.74) they washed and folded 15 pounds which was around 10 days worh of dirty clothes for 2 adults or about 3 standard backpacks tightly packed.
I wanted to mention this because we will definitely come back again and again to La Catedral and we do not want for these services to ever be cancelled. The hotel does not get a commission or profits for making sure that your clothes go out and come back to you cleaned. I was very thankful for this courtesy as I was always out of the hotel when my clothes came back.
It was so hard to say good bye to the "Dream Team of 7" Marco, Beatriz, Elena, Mayra, Oscar the Bartender, Junior the Parking Attendant and Antonio the Night Guard, their goal and main focus is to make you feel at home and they go out of their way to make you feel special.

La Catedral Hotel is a cut above the rest. It has the best staff, it is super clean, it is comfortable, and it is unique, best location, best prices, delicious breakfasts, great decor. Small enought to call it home, big enough to provide you with modern conveniences and great services.
So, go on! Make your reservations, you will not regret it!

Room Tip: Room #4, faces the main street, two beds, great room!!

The rooms were well furnished and comfortable, quiet considering it's a block from La Catedral and the center of town; the staff is attentive, friendly, and ever helpful. The breakfast was very good. Also, the parking lot is extremely secure. It's all in all a lovely little hotel with a small but lush courtyard. We stayed in 3 different rooms. The first was on the side and was quiet and felt nicely remote. The second was small, near the front door, against the street, and was fairly noisy. The third was in the back corner and very quiet and comfortable; it had a little more room than the others.

Improvement needed. I understand this is not a five star, major chain hotel, but it needs to have their basics covered. During checkout time, I had to dig in for cash to pay for laundry. They hire an outside service, and ask their guests to pay in cash on a separate bill, making it annoying if you don't have any cash. They would not take a credit card to pay for laundry, so I could not check out until I found cash. They should take credit a card payment for all services rendered.
Front door to my room was lose, and very difficult to lock from the inside. After trying for a couple minutes, I just simply gave up and went to sleep with an open door during all my stay. You can however, lock it from the outside. I did not report it because I would not spend any time inside, and did not want a maintenance crew or person to walk into the room without adequate security.
Room safe is old and did not work electronically, but because I was given a key to operate it, I figured it would open and close with it, but not the case, bottom line I had to walk around with all my belongings, cash, passport, etc.
Two people for one room, at least at the one I was in, is too many, if you want space to move around, you need to ask for a larger room. Room is so small you can hardly walk yourself, let alone with one more person with you. If you’re claustrophobic, don’t do it, if you’re a honeymooner, find a bigger place where you will have privacy.
It is located a block or two from a cathedral, close to the town square, but did not figure out why their name, but when I went inside, then noticed lots of statues of saints, etc, crosses, hence the name. You really feel you are inside a cathedral. If you don’t mind having breakfast surrounded by all sorts of religious statues that seem to be looking at you, then this is your place.
Breakfast starts at 7:00 AM. If you don’t mind waiting until then, there’s no problem, but if you are an early riser, then you will have issues. There are other places around town that open at 6:00 am.
Shower curtain kept falling, not a big deal, but it becomes one, when you have to pick it up more than once during a shower. It is obvious there is a lack of proper, constant maintenance.
Price does not go along with their services. Too much for what you get.
During my absence, room was not cleaned, they just made the bed, trash was still in the bin, toiletries were not renewed, had to use the same soap for three days.
I left a day early to get a room in Guatemala City. Did not make the least effort to get my money back as I had paid in advance. Been there, done that. I made the mistake of buying through a travel website, and once you do that, you pretty much will not get it back.
I would not stay again or recommend.
