Had dinner tonight.
The baked potatoes were quite bland: I understand that they were not baked on the spot ( it would have taken hours, even by Guatemala standards...)but they were not thoroughly re-heated and the bacon must have been left from the morning breakfast time as it was cold and rock solid, which is just lazy. Frying some bacon can't take more than a few minutes! Their banana bread from the shop, though, was excellent. So, I wouldn't bother with the cafè and just stick to the bakery.

I like to go here when I am in Antigua for a coffee and a dessert for my mid-afternoon break. The pastry is always fresh and flavorful. This past week a friend and I went and had an espresso coffee, bottle of water and a shake. As you can see in the picture they give you a menu and a slip of paper and you mark on the paper how many of each item that you want. When the waitress brought the check the total was not correct and we were overcharged by 34 Quetzales. It was my friend who noticed it and the waitress was apologetic and redid the math so the total was correct. They didn't seem particularly busy and my friend thought she was hoping that this "gringo" either wouldn't notice or wouldn't say anything and would simply pay that amount. I don't like to think this of people so you decide for yourselves and no matter where you eat - check the math when you get your check!

After several weeks in the campo eating beans and tortillas, a huge bowl of fresh fruit, yogurt and granola was beyond belief--delicious. This restaurant is an institution in Antigua, with good reason. The quality is hard to beat, the bakery is always busy, and there's even good artwork on the walls throughout.

This is one of my regular haunts when I'm in Antigua. From the outside it looks like it should be a fancy restaurant but it is actually one of the best value for money places in town, popular with locals and tourists alike. The outdoor area is one of the nicest buildings in Antigua and steeped in history and colonial architecture. It is home to some very tame birds that will literally hop onto your table if you put a few crumbs out and keep still, a very charming place all round.

The food is local fare for the most part- I nearly always come here for a typical breakfast or brunch but it is great at any time of day. Their menu has some nice soups and sandwiches as well is tex-mex and a few other things. Breakfast is the best for me- they have a good choice of typical food (huevos rancheros, frijoles etc) as well as fruit salads and huge bowls of granola and museli. Nothing terribly special but hearty and very reasonably priced. I've never had a meal I haven't enjoyed here.

The service can be hit and miss but the local ladies who do the waitressing are very friendly. It really depends on the time of day I think but just remember you aren't in a fancy restaurant and you'll forgive them for being a little casual. Just enjoy the garden or the unusual decor while you wait!

Everyone should come here at least once when they visit, you'll enjoy the setting even if you aren't into Guatemalan food and you absolutely must try banana bread baked fresh every afternoon at the panaderia (an Antigua institution).

Try to sit in the open courtyard and enjoy a true Locals treat! The food is really fresh/always good and bountiful. You will be given a menu and then asked to complete your order on a piece of paper that has the menu written on it.
