“Clean and Convenient”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 12, 2010

El Hostal is located in Antigua, about 5 blocks from Plaza Central. The location is good because it's a little away from the hubbub of the Plaza but still close to a lot of restaurants, bars, ruins, and the Internet cafe. The hostel is very clean and the people who work there are very nice and accommodating. They really have HOT showers, which is rare in Guatemala. The only caveat I'd put out there is that the rooms on the street are good but difficult to sleep because of the bar across the street. However, the other rooms are just fine. The free breakfast is awesome with its many options.

This hostel has some friendly staff, provides very good breakfasts, and the location really can't be beat. It has warm water showers in shared bathrooms and the courtyard is really nice for taking a siesta. They include modern amenities like Wifi and provide a small book exchange.

My wife and I only stayed in the private rooms, so I can't comment on the dorm room (though it was full each day, so it must be decent). The first private room we stayed in was directly across from the dorm, and near the courtyard, so it was a bit loud at night. Other than the noise, it was very comfortable with a large room, large bed, desk and chair. We added an extra night stay to the end of our visit, and were moved to a private room in the back, behind the kitchen. It was extremely small, dark and a bit musky - but we didn't expect much since they don't normally rent this room out. But since it was so busy with Semana Santa, we were just happy to have a room. Even in this room far in the back, we could hear a drunken conversation between two other guests in the courtyard at 4 in the morning.

Overall, we were happy with our stay here, mostly due to the location and the staff. We were here during one of the busiest weeks of the year, Semana Santa, and had a wonderful visit!

El Hostal is by far one of the best places to stay in Antigua. Gabby and her husband go above and beyond to make guests feel safe and comfortable, such as providing homemade dinners for the guests upon request- Gabby is a great cook. Though Cafe No Se is noisy at night, El Hostal is in a nice location as it is far from the downtown bars but still near many places to visit. I often think about my stay at El Hostal with fond memories. Highly recommended.

I spent 3 weeks at El Hostal whilst studying Spanish and couldn't have been more pleased with my stay. The hostel is spotless, the showers are hot, breakfasts are fantastic and the staff couldn't be nicer or more accomadating. There is also free wifi and a brilliant laundry service. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending El Hostal.

I would rank this as excellent if it weren't for the noise. My friend and I stayed in two different hostels during our stay in Antigua and this hostel was miles away better than the other one (Los Encuentros) with regards to cleanliness and location. I see the staff thoroughly clean the premises everyday and the bathrooms were always kept spotless. The location was a 10 minute walk from everywhere else. It's also right across the street from the popular Cafe No Se, where we grabbed dinner during our stay in Antigua. There was free breakfast and Wi-Fi as well. I have to disagree with the previous reviewer about booking online. I booked through hostelworld and they charged us $10/night/person, that is $4 cheaper than what they were charging at the front desk. It's good to compare, but $10 for this hostel was such a steal. Anyway, my only issue was the thin walls. We got Room Number 5 (please avoid this room), which was located adjacent to the girl's bathroom. During our stay, there was a big group of French students who were very noisy in the bathroom at 7am. They were doing karaoke and chatting as if it nobody else was still sleeping. I complained to the staff, but nothing was done. Other than that, I'm pleased with my stay and will definitely stay here again.

A very pleasant, clean, friendly, and fairly central hostel. We stayed in the double room for 4 nights (prebooked) and then another night (walk in) when our shuttle transport fell through. Although prebooking online is more expensive than the price you are charged if you just walk through the door I would recommend prebooking if you are keen and want to be sure you have a place. We were travelling in the off season - October - and only lucked into a room as someone cancelled last minute.

As for the rooms, they were reasonably spacious. Our double had two twin beds and two small tables and chair, as well as WiFi access and breakfast included. Super tasting local food. No complaints there! All rooms use the shared bathroom facilities but these are cleaned daily and well stocked with soap and toilet paper. The sinks are actually in the corridor outside the bathroom which makes it seem a bit "communal." Laundry facilties are available at a reasonable price, and there are various tours - local and national, which can be booked; although these are cheaper booked elsewhere.

Staff are very friendly and helpful although the level of English varies among the staff. We had a situation with Monja Blanca shuttle service from Monterrico to Panajachel (Pana). They refused to honour our ticket and told us a lot of lies to get us off their back. In the end, we had to go to the tourist police. I mention this as the hostel staff were very helpful and assisted us in finding the shuttle company's Antigua office location - which Monja Blanca said didn't exist.

The hostel is fairly central. It's about a 10 minute walk to the main square. The down side is that it's noisy. If you are a light sleeper you'll be woken at 6:00, 6:15, 6:30 and 7:00 by the church bells. By 7:00am there will be loads of cars, trucks, carts, pedestrians, barking dogs, etc on the street outside. No chance of sleep. Trying for an early night doesn't work either as there is a bar across the road that is open until midnight. If you stay MAKE SURE you request a room that does not back onto the road. We had to settle for such a room on the night we didn't have a reservation and we got no sleep at all. Our previous room was much better as it was further away from the road. So you could just about manage with ear plugs.
