“Clean, Friendly, Central Hostel - Shame About the Noise”
Reviewed January 13, 2010

A very pleasant, clean, friendly, and fairly central hostel. We stayed in the double room for 4 nights (prebooked) and then another night (walk in) when our shuttle transport fell through. Although prebooking online is more expensive than the price you are charged if you just walk through the door I would recommend prebooking if you are keen and want to be sure you have a place. We were travelling in the off season - October - and only lucked into a room as someone cancelled last minute.

As for the rooms, they were reasonably spacious. Our double had two twin beds and two small tables and chair, as well as WiFi access and breakfast included. Super tasting local food. No complaints there! All rooms use the shared bathroom facilities but these are cleaned daily and well stocked with soap and toilet paper. The sinks are actually in the corridor outside the bathroom which makes it seem a bit "communal." Laundry facilties are available at a reasonable price, and there are various tours - local and national, which can be booked; although these are cheaper booked elsewhere.

Staff are very friendly and helpful although the level of English varies among the staff. We had a situation with Monja Blanca shuttle service from Monterrico to Panajachel (Pana). They refused to honour our ticket and told us a lot of lies to get us off their back. In the end, we had to go to the tourist police. I mention this as the hostel staff were very helpful and assisted us in finding the shuttle company's Antigua office location - which Monja Blanca said didn't exist.

The hostel is fairly central. It's about a 10 minute walk to the main square. The down side is that it's noisy. If you are a light sleeper you'll be woken at 6:00, 6:15, 6:30 and 7:00 by the church bells. By 7:00am there will be loads of cars, trucks, carts, pedestrians, barking dogs, etc on the street outside. No chance of sleep. Trying for an early night doesn't work either as there is a bar across the road that is open until midnight. If you stay MAKE SURE you request a room that does not back onto the road. We had to settle for such a room on the night we didn't have a reservation and we got no sleep at all. Our previous room was much better as it was further away from the road. So you could just about manage with ear plugs.

El Hostal is a really nice little place with very friendly and accommodating staff. Even though they do not all speak English, you are able to communicate with them in basic English. The first couple of nights I stayed in their single room, which is very small and from where you are not able to access their free WIFI. Thus, I upgraded to one of their double rooms from where reception is better. But honestly, the WIFI is widely available here in Antigua, and there are places with better and faster connections than El Hostal. However, the hostel is very clean and has a nice cosy atmosphere, although it not is the place to stay if you are looking for an all night party - which I was not.

My husband and I kept coming back to El Hostal when were traveling around Guatemala. The owner Gabby is so lovely and helpful. There are only 7 rooms in the hostel- including 2 dorms which makes it lovely and friendly. The bathrooms are shared for all the rooms, but they are scrubbed everyday so it really isn't a problem. The rooms are set around a cute little outside courtyard which is also where breakfast is served. Breakfast is included in the room rate and is really delicious! Pancakes, Eggs rancheros, omeletes, french toast, fruit and granola- you can order what you like!
Try to get a room that doesn't face the front (3 and 5 for the doubles) because the bar Cafe no se across the street can be loud. The rooms are very basic, but this is a hostel after all. The offer free wifi, a cheap laundry service, tours and shuttles and the location could not be better. Right across the street from the popular Sky Bar and cafe no se and a 5 or so minute walk from the central park.
The communal dinner that Gabby cooks for guests on Monday night is fabulous- and such a nice way to meet other travelers. If you are looking for cheap accommodation in Antigua- and are not interested in the party atmosphere then El Hostal is perfect- it's more B&B than hostel. But you will have to call ahead- they fill up fast!
