“Warm, Fun, Comfortable Hostel”
Reviewed December 6, 2013 via mobile

My husband and I stayed in a private room here for several nights and would return in a heartbeat even just for the spectacular, filling, and included (!) breakfast. Not only that, the nice communal area and the 4-hour long happy hour fostered a nice community vibe, which was a happy surprise. They offer plenty of filtered water for a small fee, have a friendly and helpful staff willing to answer almost any question, and have a very efficient cleaning staff. A great place and value in Antigua.

Amazing value!! Great hostel, vibe, service and location...but it was the addition of the free breakfast that really set it above all of the rest. This was the first stop for me on a 2 month trip, so I was very pleased to be welcomed by friendly people with lots of good advice. Fantastic stay, planned for 3 nights - stayed 6!!

We stayed at El Hostal on the recommendation of the tour company who took us on a two night volcano hike. We had never stayed at a hostel before, and we were pleasantly surprised. First, the service was great. We ended up going on the hike a day earlier than planned, and they were extremely accommodating about changing our reservation to one night before the hike and two after, rather than two before and one after as we had originally planned. Second, although none of the rooms have private baths, which we would have preferred, the shared bath is spotless, the water pressure is great and the water is hot, and the towels are nicer than towels in a lot of "nice" hotels. We stayed in one of the private rooms, and the bed was comfortable, the pillows were good, and the linens were high quality and extremely clean. Third, the breakfast, which is included as part of the room charge, was delicious. They offer a few choices, and between us we tried almost all of them over the three days, and all were excellent.

Our only complaint was that with the arrangement of the rooms around the central courtyard, we were woken up a few times in the night by other guests returning from their night out partying, and they continued the party in the courtyard. I suspect this is just the nature of hostels and there is nothing the management could do about it, so it doesn't impact my favorable review of the establishment.

Reasonable location near to central square.
We arrived late due to protests in Lanquin, called hostel to inform and they were understanding.
Difficult to get into property at night as front door closed, no bell and long wait for staff to open the door.
Very good clean rooms, cleaned daily. Not damp. Good showers with hot water and purified water refills for 1Q.
Breakfast was good from 7.30-10am so good amount of time open
We needed to print tickets out for bus journey the next day which we had on email. Previous hostels had printed these for us if we emailed them. We asked hostel reception staff who refused and directed to nearby Internet cafe, not very helpful and would have been easy enough to do. Hence not very high rating as didn't go above what was expected.

I stayed in El Hostal 2 weeks during my traveling in Central America. It is definitely on of the best hostels I've stayed in. You could find cheaper places but the price is worth it - great rooms, REAL hot shower, fully equiped kitchen to use, and the best breakfast in all of Antigua.
The staff is always there to help, the owners are the nicest couple and they would really do everything for you to feel at home :) The dorms are spacious - I stayed in the 10 bedroom dorm and I never felt uncomfortable, or that I need more space. The private rooms are bigger than some hotel's...
Rooms and all of the hostel are cleaned daily, the security is really good - you could leave your stuff on your bed or in the communial area and no one would touch them.
Worth every quetzal!

Room Tip: If you need a more quiet room take the 6 bed dorm - the 10 bed dorm is across the sreet of Cafe No S...

Only stayed a few nights whilst passing through Antigua but thought this place was great. Lovely comfy bunks and social space with hammocks and couches. Big lockers both underbeds and beside, and plenty of nice big showers. Breakfast choice was great too. Staff were very helpful, and the packed lunches available for taking away on shuttle rides was great! Right opposite the fab cafe no se so rooms at the front can be a little noisy at night, but that's only a tiny flaw. Definately recommend staying here!
