We found this place in the Lonely Planet guide, checked out the website and knew we wanted to experience it. We had booked a night and ended up extending for another night in the morning. We were hoping to stay in the tree house, but it was booked weeks in advance so we ended up in Cabin 3. All in all, I think Cabin 3 was really good. For Cabin 1 and 2, you'll have to climb a flight of stairs. Though if we ever come back to Guatemala, we'll try to get the tree house. ( We loved staying in Antigua. Cafe Condesa in Antigua is fanastic, we loved the dessert and never got a chance to eat a meal there, but I think that would be great too. )

It was totally relaxing at Earth Lodge and it is great to have breakfast or lunch looking out towards Antigua.

The shower was cold but it was supposed to be hot. I let Drew know and he said he'd check on it. Later on, my husband ended up having a cold shower too. Perhaps just a malfunction that day?

Do arrange for the pick up truck. It seemed like it might be confusing to take the other option, but I don't really know. It was fun standing up in the back of it. Wear sunglasses to keep stuff outta your eyes.

I agree with the previous review. You are kinda stranded out there, but then who said that was a bad thing. Expect to eat your meals at the lodge. They are good. Dinners are family style. I got sick the on the last supper, but maybe it was just me cause everyone else was fine.

And you do have to walk down to Earth Lodge from the drop off point and back up. Wear proper shoes when arriving instead of flip flops.

Swinging on a swing that goes out over a mountain really does take a leap of faith!

I dont quite know why i didn't 'Feel it' at Earth Lodge. I have stayed in loads of these types of eco-friendly places worldwide and usually enjoyed them.

The setting is fantastic, up in hte mountains with fresh air and amazing views. May be it was the weather that spoiled it. It did rain the whole time we stayed and the mist obscured the view for most of the time.

Also, i found the staff to be those type of new age hippies that drive me nuts! just to arrogant for me. Also, we ordered our choice of food for the evening meal (fish) then at dinner we were told they did not have any fish so would have to have meat. Good job we aren't veggies! Why didn't they inform us earlier in the day?

We stayed in the treehouse which does have the most spectacular views but, again, the mist rolled in and we could see nothin. The noise of the rain on the roof prevented a decent nights sleep and trying to get to the cold showers in a 'monsoon' was no fun!

I am sure that on a beautiful summer weekend Earth Lodge would be great.... just don't go there when the weather is bad!

I would just like to comment on a few things written in this review...while I do realize that the weather made this person's stay a bit more difficult, I think this review is not quite accurate.
First of all, we had limited amounts of fish, but our menu a few other items on it, and we had simply miscalculated the number of fish orders. We however gave this person their next choice of meat option. Secondly, the arrogant new- age hippie comment is completely inaccurate...this person was at the lodge for a work meeting, therefore the staff wasn't interacting as much with these guests as we would normally do. I guess that would explain the arrogant comment. And the new age hippie thing...well, anyone who comes to Earth Lodge and meets the staff will tell you this is not true at all. Not that I have anything against "new age hippies" but I find the term was used in a derogatory way and i truly feel this reviewer doesn't quite understand the meaning of this phrase.
We always appreciate constructive criticism and comments on ways to improve, but we feel this review was neither but instead inaccurate and a bit harsh.

If you are going to be in antigua, you must go here. Impossible not to like, great food, lots of fun, relaxing, good hiking, etc. Try to reserve the "tree cabin" if you can, it is great. The view is great and the sunsets are too. Literally best service of anywhere i have ever stayed.
The one bad thing i can think of is that there is a short walk from the road to the hotel, and it is uphill on the way out. this is not a problem, since the staff is willing to help you with this.

This hotel is set about 10km outside Antigua, on the hill overlooking the city and is situated on a working avocado farm.

The owners arranged for a pick up truck to collect us from the centre of Antigua for a cost of around Q50, which drops you off at the top of a dirt track leading to the hotel. The location is spectacular, there are views of the city and the surrounding volcanoes and the hotel is set in beautiful grounds. We stayed in their dorm room which is $5 each per night, and in a log cabin with bunk beds. The bathroom is a short walk away with a cold shower (very invigorating!) and compost toilet - all very clean. There are also options to stay in private cabins, camping, or even stay in a tree house (book well in advance as I think this is very popular).

The food I had was excellent, really good vegetarian food at a good price, and there is a good bar too (check out the happy hour at 5!)

This is really a place for chilling out, and there are hammocks and seats desgined for just this. If you are feeling a little more energetic there are some walks you can do locally.

Although the location is fantastic, you do need to be aware that once you are at Earth Lodge it is a bit difficult to keep going in and out of Antigua, so this is more of a good base for relaxation. I would recommend you combine a few nights here with a couple of nights in Antigua itself to make the most of this area of Guatemala.
