“Go in just to see it”
Reviewed August 21, 2014

We had a wonderful breakfast buffet here. Very upscale. The best thing however is walking through the property and seeing the grounds, the ruins, the birds, the candle shop, etc, etc. Go just to look around and take pictures, even if you don't eat. One of the prettiest spots in Antigua.

“Beautiful atmosphere and service, reliable menu, just don’t order wine”
Reviewed August 17, 2014

The breakfast buffet is reason alone to stay here! Eggs cooked to order, pupusas made by a lady as you watch, plus all kinds of bread, fresh fruit, meats, cheeses, etc. We also ate several lunches and dinners there, and each time we found the service to be attentive and the food tasty. Our favorites included the Sopita Chapina, the Duo de Carnes and of course the Plato Chapín. Don’t bother with the attempts at more creative dishes such as the grilled watermelon salad with pineapple foam – it tries to be nouvelle cuisine but ends up tasting more like dessert than salad. However, when we asked for them to make us a green salad (since we didn’t find one on the menu), the chef sent us a wonderful salad with lettuce, carrots, hearts of palm and avocado – the best salad I ate in Guatemala!

One weakness of the CSD restaurant, similar to most places in Guatemala, is that they don’t put much emphasis on wine, and waiters have little training in wine pairing. My husband asked for a red wine to go with his steak, and they brought him a rosé. The only red wine by the glass he saw on the menu was $500 Quetzales PER CUP, which means about $65 per glass. When he asked why it was so expensive, he was told for “the class of wine.” Although Guatemala has steep import fees for Spanish and French wine, and California wine is basically unavailable, they still can offer plenty of excellent options from Chile and Argentina.

“Creative menu, mix of flavors and superb food presentation”
Reviewed August 16, 2014

This Restaurant is located at the Hotel Casa Santo Domingo which was a monastery during the Spanish Colonial time. The architecture maintains the trace of the baroque period in which was built. The antique religious figures adorn every hallway, every corner of this beautiful hotel. The atmosphere is peaceful and magical, the magic that you find in many places in Guatemala. After strolling the Hotel grounds we ended up at the Restaurant. It is as beautiful as the grounds we had just walked. The service is excellent and the menu is a creation of a very creative mix of flavors. You find a very gourmet food that combines the Mayan local ingredients in European dishes such as risottos, pastas and grilled fish. I opted for the Tuna tartar as an appetizer, it came beautifully presented on a plate with a splash of guacamole and fried yucca which was black, it actually looked like pieces of charcoal on the plate. My companion had to ask of it was edible. We were told it was friend yucca blackened with squid ink. It was interesting and tasty. The tuna exquisite, very delicate flavor. As a second I had the grilled salmon on a bed of something that looked like mash potatoes but it was actually mashed pineapples ...it was amazing! the fish was unbelievable tasty and so was the bed of greens on which it was placed. As dessert, I had the pear in wine that came accompanied with a ball of vanilla ice cream. Of course, we had to pair this beautiful meal with a nice bottle of wines. The choices are many but we opted for a Trapiche Malbec which was soo good and for 170 quetzales (the equivalent to US$23.00), it was a bargain. Once again, another Malbec that does not let me down. You can always count on a Malbec! The experience was well worth it. Food, service and ambiance almost flawless and I say almost flawless because the entrees were kind of cold when they got to us. Not even warm. This did not bother us much but I know that most of the people like their food served hot. That was the only flaw, the rest was perfect...magical.

“Tasty, But Skip The Spaghetti”
Reviewed August 7, 2014

My husband and I had lunch here on a Thursday afternoon to celebrate our anniversary, sans kids! Reservations were not required, we walked right in without waiting.
The food is good but a bit pricey. We enjoyed our soups best. I really liked my prawns and polenta. My husband was disappointed with his bacon and prawn spaghetti.
The service was great. Our waiter was attentive without being a pest and the food was delivered shortly after it was ordered. Our waiter was great about letting me practice my Spanish but if you don't speak Spanish, the staff knew enough English to help you enjoy your meal.
The ambiance is also really nice. The designers did an excellent job of combining modern decorations and furniture in an ancient setting.
Overall, we had a great lunch and will be returning.
