El Convento Boutique Hotel
Ranked #2 of 75 Hotels in Antigua
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 12, 2009

El Convento is a most elegant boutique hotel, well located about five minutes walk from the Parque Central and opposite the former Capuchin Convent (whose partially restored ruins are well worth a visit). The hotel is a careful conversion of a town house - not, despite the name, a convent - and includes a small indoor garden and pool. We stayed four nights in a tastefully equipped ‘junior suite’ which included a private patio with a jacuzzi. Only an oversized TV screen looked out of place. But the lighting was really poor and we needed head torches to read in bed. There is complimentary in-room internet access and a public computer in the comfortable lounge. Laundry service was good but overpriced.

The small restaurant was excellent for breakfast and dinner but it was quite expensive and had some unnecessary affectations e.g. bottled water from Norway!

All the staff were exceptionally helpful but only those at the front desk were comfortable in English.

We rate this hotel five star in the boutique category and recommend it to those who can afford it. But there are many competitors and it is probably worthwhile checking around for the best value.

Tip - the nearby Casa Santo Domingo is a good and less expensive fine dining alternative (and also a magnificent hotel)

El Convento was our favorite inn during the two special weeks we spent in Guatemala. It is a paradigm for the perfect boutique hotel. A year old, every facility is spotless and cotemporary, yet the style is that of a restored 17th century hacienda. Our room and bathroom was reasonably large and very comfortable. The fixtures were brand new and the style was timeless. Our room had a hot tub in the patio in back of our room. The location of the inn is a particular feature. Antigua is small enough to get anywhere in a few minutes, but the center of the town can be loud and polluted. El Convento is a seven minute walk and three minute tooke tooke ride from the center of town, yet it is far enough away to be much quieter and fragrant than hotels nearer the center. Even so, the hotel is close to several of Antigua’s most spectacular historic gems.

The exceptional rate we received at the last minute was a remarkable bonus.

Very nice comfortable beds with nice linens and La Occitane shampoo/soaps. Room Service & mini-bar. Air/heat control in room. Restaurant & bar a nice place to sit back & relax. Steak w/mustard sauce is excellent. Breakfast omlets are wonderful There is a computer to use. The pool is more like a water feature. The view from the roof is nice with a bar, fireplace with places to lounge around. Great friendly service, knowing a little spanish will go a long way. Would definately stay here again.

We decided to go to Guatemala for a special treat and after a lot of searching decided that El Convento fitted the bill. It was spotless, the staff were friendly with a fantastic atmosphere. It is a small hotel so it is very quiet. We had the Bella Epocha suite which was superb. Hope to go back some day.

This hotel is amazing! The rooms are great, the bathrooms spectacular, comfortable beds, staff nice and good food. We stayed there for our first three out of six nights in Guatemala. Was the best hotel by far!!!!!! Can't wait to stay there again.

ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL. We stayed for 3 nights, and loved every detail of it!!! The hotel has been decorated with style, keeping in mind Antigua Guatemala's architecture. We loved its peaceful corridors, the always smiling employees, the rooms are greatly decorated and fully equipped with everything you could dream of. The bed is so comfortable!! And of course everything is impeccably clean.
We tried its restaurant, the 'Sitz', and it was just delicious.
We strongly recommend it for a romantic and peaceful getaway.

My husband and I stayed here recently and could not stop admiring each and every detail this hotel has to offer.
We stayed in a jr. suite and still, it felt absolutely luxurious and stunning. The architecture and decor are a perfect mix between the Colonial feel with state of the art amenities.
The room was big, very high ceiling, beautiful comfortable bed with the finest linens.
The bathroom was truly stunning. You felt like you were in the most exclusive spa.
The staff is very courteous and the restaurant... scrumptious food and elegant setting. I don't think I will ever stay enywhere else in
Antigua. Oh, btw, it is also children friendly which is refreshing. Many small luxury hotels like this one don't really caer to children. This one does. They even have a children's menu at the restaurant. Overall an excellent experience!!!!!!
