A wonderful and impressive collection of automated musical instruments with nicely even paced information delivered by a very visitor friendly tour guide covered in approx. 2 hours. There is a well stocked gift shop worth spending time in.

On a rainy day in Traverse City we went to the mall because didn't know what else to do our kids and a local resident struck up a conversation with us. He recommended the Music House Museum as something interesting to do. We ended up going not really knowing what to expect and had a really good time. The exibits were great. The tour guides were knowledgeable and kept it very interesting. We had four children ages 12-15 with us and they enjoyed the tour as much as we did. There were lots of interesting things to see and listen to and we were definitely glad we went.

On tour with a 30 person group from Oregon, our Tour Operator found this GEM in Michigan. The Music House Museum is located in historic restored farm buildings with a collection of musical instruments large and small which play on their own in some fashion or another.

I loved a large almost room-size carousel music maker -- I forget the name of it but still have the image of it in my mind as well as a huge T. Mortier hand carved dance organ located on a mezzanine that filled the whole high-ceiling space with music.

This fascinating historical collection is both a rich visual and auditory experience. They have a gift shop so that you can take home a little bit of music, too. I highly recommend this fun stop about 8 miles north of Traverse City on US 31.

I have visited this museum twice. The tours are very factual, a bit dry, but interesting, nonetheless. Located in a large, old white barn, there is a small self tour section with old musical instruments, phonographs, jukeboxes, etc.! The tour takes you through the rest of the barn, with short talks on various pianos, organs and such. They play a tune (not the tour guide) for you, some are short and some are a bit too long. All are player pianos-which means they play themselves. The history is excellent. The also have an old general store, and old local bar transported to this museum, to view. The largest piece sits at the top of the barn, and fits perfectly, and this was all by luck. It is a beautiful piece of rosewood. There is also a nice little museum store to purchase music boxes in many various forms and styles. $10/adult; $25 family. About 1.5 hours to see everything. Parking adjacent.
