Owner description: The Nantucket Atheneum is the public library for Nantucket, Massachusetts. The institution was formed in 1834 as a private, membership organization and became a public library in 1900. The Nantucket Atheneum offers free access to millions of books, films and music as well as over 1,000 programs for all ages year round. Our iconic building, built in 1846, is located in the heart of downtown and features art and artifacts important to the island's maritime history as the center of whaling. The library also provides a free wifi signal, computer access on the second floor and a beautiful, inviting garden.

“Beautiful building. Great place to get movies for rainy days”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 6, 2012

If you have a library card, you can get a great selection of movies and books, access the internet on numerous laptops. Just a nice place to have access to. They also host various activities in the garden on the side garden. An art show was there when I visited and it was just lovely to stroll through.

“Its the Library!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2012

The Nantucket Atheneum is the oldest building in downtown, on India Street - and its the town Library! It is a beautifully restored and maintained building.
The Antheneum is part of the Cape Cod Library system, so they can get visitors almost any book, DVD or periodical you desire. The Antheneum also supports movies, lectures and children's activities, making it a great spot to get to know for visitors to the Island.

“A gorgeous building with incredible history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2012

Though the Atheneum, like most of downtown Nantucket was destroyed by the great fire of 1846, the townspeople rebuilt it true to its history. Today it offers everything from historical volumes, famous speakers, and wifi to people who come to enjoy Nantucket.

“Steeped in History...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2012

This library is a wonderful, historic place to be! Frankly, being there brights me up! The staff are average but very nice and pleasant, and the book collection (i've poked about) is also pretty descent. Would most certainly recommend to anyone.
