Description: Celebrating their 17th season, Wendy and Peter Jannelle are proud of what they have created at Fifty-Six Union. The most recent addition is the outside space. Completely protected, with a full bar, the atmosphere is playful and fun. Dinner is served nightly (year-round) at 5:30 PM, offering Peter's House Specialties that include the best Curried Mussels in the World! Peter is a '78 graduate of The Culinary Institute of America. His career started by working on The Holland America Lines. Afterward he came to Nantucket and became the chef de cuisine at the now defunct India House Restaurant. This is where he met Wendy. Wendy and Peter have been on the Island since the early 80's, and have worked in some of the best kitchens and dining rooms on Nantucket. Their two sons, Andrew and Blair, have both taken turns working in the Family Business. Andrew's interest has been in the kitchen, while Blair can currently be seen behind the bar, or serving on the floor.

“A GREAT surprise!”
Reviewed August 25, 2009

This place is a hidden gem on Nantucket. Off the beaten path a bit, yes. But worth the walk. The restaurant is bustling but not too loud, the service was impecable and the food was outstanding -- not to mention unbelievably affordable! We had the most amazing mussels for an appetizer and the waitress (thoughtfully) brought us extra bread to sop up the mouthwatering broth. The oysters were top notch as well. We also had a salmon special that was out of this world. The tripe on the menu was good but completely overshadowed by the special. Too full for dessert, we happily walked off what we could on the 4 or 5 block walk back to Main Street. I highly recommend Fifty-Six Union. A great, overall experience.

“So glad we tried Fifty-Six Union!”
Reviewed September 18, 2008

Fifty-Six Union was great! We loved how nice the staff was. The truffle oil/herb/cheese frites were so yummy! It was cozy in there and the drink menu was tasty as well. They toned down the spices a wee bit in the rice dish (the shrimp in it were huge). My husband had the pork dish and it was perfect. I wish I had room for dessert! This is the first place we've been on the island that has its own parking lot--an added bonus!
