“Great place to stay in ACK”
Reviewed August 26, 2013

My wife and I stayed there for one night last week. The house goes for teh retro-chic vibe in the lobby. Beth who I belive is the assiatn manager greeted us warmly and was very helpful in assisting us in our plans. The room was small but the bed was very comfirtable and the shower was awesome. Easy walk to town from the location. The breakfast was very satisfying as well. Enjoy.

We have stayed at quite a few boutique hotels, as the Veranda House proprietors describe themselves, over the years (Nine Zero in Boston would be an example) and this is anything but that. The outside of the building looks fairly run down (it is a very old building after all) and the interior is somewhat shabby and hardly sophisticated. The pictures on their web site of their decks and gardens all show new, shiny chairs, decking and a hip décor. This is not really the case. Most of the hotel actually looks heavily worn, not that it is just an old building, but the interior walls and deck railing need a fresh coat of paint and the décor (carpets, furniture, etc.) needs a freshening as well. I understand they are trying to portray the Nantucket “look” with some of this but it just comes across as run down and worn out. The “living room” portion of their lobby is nicely decorated and they would do well to try to duplicate some of that feel in the rooms.
We stayed in room 22 while there and it looks nothing like the picture on the web site. It is very dark, very small and dingy. The closet was not big enough to allow even a thin person to enter it sideways. We spent our week trying squeeze by each other as we moved about the room. The price wasn’t terrible but they need to raise their own expectations of room cleanliness, appearance and décor. Something as simple as a fresh coat of paint could have helped I think. There also is no room safe so you will probably need to drag any of your valuables around with you while you are away from the hotel.
As far as the breakfast is concerned they tend to present a small offering of pastries, a small portion of fruit and then a main course like a waffle or crepe. Because, apparently the breakfast joints in town that serve stuff like eggs and bacon have an in with the local select board, there is a local law that prevents them from serving any kind of cooked protein. So if you are looking for a heartier breakfast you need to go elsewhere. The breakfast service is quick and cheerful but the food preparation is just average.
It is in a great location, only a few blocks from downtown but far enough to allow for some peace and quiet. The staff is very good and did a great job getting us reservations for some of the busiest restaurants on the island. They were always happy to provide assistance and suggestions for restaurants, sight-seeing and directions.
Over-all not really a great value for the money and we would be unlikely to return.

We were so disheartened to read this guest's review. We are sorry that they did not enjoy our property and they are correct that the Veranda House is an old building - it was, after all, built in 1684.

We feel as though we do a good job of paying homage to the historical integrity of the building, giving it a classic Nantucket feel while keeping it well maintained yet offering contemporary decor. Each year we carefully critique the property and update where needed to maintain a crisp and fresh appearance.

Our greatest disappointment from the fact that we were not given an opportunity discuss any of this with the guests as upon departure, these guests told us that they enjoyed their stay and gave us no reason to doubt it. Naturally, we want our guests to enjoy their time with us, and we do our very best to accommodate them according to their needs. We also react quickly to any guest issues when given the opportunity and would welcome the chance to do so with these guests as they were lovely to host and we would be happy to have them again.

Amazing. Not huge B&B fans (we're 30) and walking up to The Veranda House, we thought that's what we were in for. More than pleasantly surprised by super cool staff, amazing views from all of the verandas, modern yet comfortable decor and awesome room we stayed in (Room 25). We eat paleo and were psyched to see tons of fruit for breakfast. We love trying new food and checking out all the beaches and got perfect recommendations from the Veranda House gals (REAL recommendations...like food is amazing but scene is uppity, go for lunch rather than dinner, etc.). We enjoy meeting new people and chatting but this vaca was just for us...it was like the staff read our minds because they were there when we needed them and gone when we wanted to do our own thing. Our stay at the Veranda House made us feel way more like locals than tourists. We'll be back next year. Thanks for everything, ladies!

The Veranda House was perfect for us. From the sophisticated decor, to the location, you cannot beat it. Morning breakfast was delicious and afternoon sparkling wine was great. Because we were there for an anniversary, we opted to pay extra for the room with views of the harbour. Although not a necessity, they were extraordinary! I would highly recommend a stay here!

This was our first visit to the island and we chose The Veranda House. From booking our reservation, to booking our ferry tickets and making dinner reservations the staff (especially Bethany) was wonderful and attentive. The location is great, within walking distance to all of the town shops, restaurants, and the ferry. The hotel and grounds are beautiful, although please note that this is a very old house with no elevator. Our room was on the third floor, which gave us a harbor view, but it was a trek up and down the stairs.

Room Tip: Note the room descriptions online, some rooms are very small. We stayed in room 17 on the third floo...

I have been staying at many hotels over the years including New York and Napa Valley. The staff made our stay a pleasure and they went out of their way to answer our requests and make recommendations. This is our second stay, and we look forward to returning. This is a very stylish facility with all the extra detail you would expect. This is what Nantucket is all about, and The Veranda House made our stay special.

The Veranda House on Nantucket was wonderful. The Inn is beautiful the breakfasts were amazing, the gardens are beautiful and the staff are top notch. This was truly the best vacation in part because the Veranda House is wonderful and the staff did everything possible to ensure the vacation was wonderful. I travel a great deal and we vacation quite a bit and this was by far the best place we have stayed. We booked our stay for next summer before we even left.
Highly recommend the Veranda House Inn.
