Owner description: Towering more than 60 feet, this historic lighthouse was established in 1784, destroyed in 1984 and rebuilt in 1986. Located on the Coskata Coatue Wildlife Refuge. You can get a tour of the lighthouse if you join one of the Trustees of Reservations guided natural history tours depending on the time of year and access to the lighthouse. Beach access is limited during storms and high tides. Always check the local Great Point tides and never drive through water!

If you rent a 4- wheel drive vehicle, try to time your visit with the tours offered to the top. Fabulous

Rent a jeep and drive out to the point where you can no longer drive. Walk to the lighthouse and look for seals. SO FUN.

We reached the lighthouse by boat as the road is closed for conservation reasons just now. I love lighthouses and this one was special. Feel lucky to have seen it as well as the other 2 on the island.

What makes the Great Point lighthouse a challenge isn’t the driving on the beach to get to it (although stopping to buy the $45 permit and to let the air out of your tires is time consuming), it’s the fact that you can’t drive all the way to it. The park has closed off the last 2 miles to jeeps, forcing you to proceed on foot. It’s beautiful (and windier than the rest of the island), but a bit of a hike.

Hi-It is a 2 mile round trip hike! You pass by the nesting birds on your hike and see the many small chicks that have just hatched out. Good for you to make the trek!

Seasonal trips . The area is protected. When local birds are nesting you cannot enter this area. We were able too, June 20th, 2018

Glad you had a chance to drive out! We have over 2 miles of beach open for vehicles, and walking the last mile along the Atlantic shoreline is very popular. Seals are usually around, when it is warm they tend to stay in the water. The birds are now hatching out in the tern colony and it is possible to see the fuzzy chicks on the beach. Thanks for visiting!
