“Exceptional Hotel, not accommadating in some areas.”
Reviewed July 12, 2009

The White Elephant came highly reccommended to us by a friend.
We chose to take the regular ferry to Nantucket, and made arrangements for The White Elephant van service to pick us up at the dock. The van wasn't there, so the dock concierge called the hotel for us, and the van eventually came. Dissapointing.
The hotel was stunning, the front desk and bell staff were great.
We were on our honeymoon, so we were pleased to see a gorgeous room with complimentary chocolate covered strawberrys and a nice card. That night we had an exceptional dinner at the hotels Brant Point Grill.
We stayed only one night, so in the morning, we had a very expensive in room breakfast before we checked out.
We were dissapointed again to discover that they were reluctant to drive us back to the ferry ( a service that they were supposed to offer). They agreed to drive us when they were taking other guests, which would have been within 5 minutes of our departure time. The whole thing was a silly and unneccesary problem as the dock was only a 5 minute drive. We could have walked but it was raining, so we ended up calling a cab.
Overall, our experience was good. It is a beautiful and luxurious hotel. We just had some unfortunate snags. If you stay here, we reccommend taking the fast ferry, they unfortunately don't accommadate for the regular one.
Watch for the "hot dates, cool rates" deals.

The White Elephant hotel is everything you would expect of a five star hotel. Good service, friendly staff, nice ammenities, and good location to everything. We had a great stay. Our Garden cottage was clean and very large. All the bedding was super soft and well planned to make sure we had an enjoyable stay on the island. We got a good deal on their sale rates and it was the perfect way to enjoy Nantucket. It was a close walk to everything.

The Good
- Very close to town, 3 minute walk
- Hotel looks over the docks
- Free coffee in the morning and port & cheese in the afternoon
- Well maintained, grounds and room were clean
- Room service was prompt and the food was hot and decent
- They have shuttle that will move you around town for free
- Staff were pleasant

The Bad
- Spa and restaurant are over priced
- Restaurant not up to much in terms of food, they gave us $50 voucher - which should have tipped us off that there was a problem
- If your room faces the docks, you get blasted with diesel fumes every hour from the ferries arriving, not much the hotel can do about this though
- We had one or two bad experiences with staff. This places closes in the winter. I do not envy the hotel the job of finding summer employees on Nantucket – very hard......

The location is everything here, plus the property is well maintained. I would return.

We stayed at the White Elephant for a few days during November. Decided to try the Residences. It was off season and town was quite. We were greeted by professional, friendly and accommodating staff when we arrived. We were offered a room in the Main Hotel for a discount if we preferred since the hotel was close to empty but once we saw the residence we reserved we decided to stay. The residence provides every luxury with fine attention to detail. House keeping was absolutely wonderful and I have extremely high standards. There is a living space with flat screen and blue ray disc, a kitchenette with every devise you will possibly need, a dining area, a master bedroom with a very nice bathroom decorated with gorgeous light blue and white marble and an additional bedroom and bath. It was private and quite and service was excellent. A nice cheese tray and wine were waiting in our room upon arrival. We ate in their restaurant the first night we were there and it was excellent. Again, the staff responded to your every need. We had a wonderful stay and really enjoyed Nantucket during shoulder season. I would highly recommend the residences at The White Elephant! We plan to return.

We just returned from a special birthday celebration at the White Elephant, and would be more than pleased to spend every vacation there in the future. From the moment we met Christine at the front desk, our every care was taken care of. As the hotel was not totally booked, she allowed us to look at different rooms in our same price range, and ended up with a beautiful room overlooking the harbour, with a porch with sitting for two. Chocolates on the pillows, nice mushy robes for the cold and damp days we had while there, and even chocolate covered strawberries for my husband's birthday just added a special touch. Lou at the conceriege desk also added some wonderful suggestions as to where to eat, and get that local flair. The White Elephant was just what we needed for a lovely and romantic weekend away.

LOVED staying at the White Elephant for Daffodil Weekend. I went with my sister and have been to Nantucket probably 30 times staying at various B&B's and private homes/rentals. My recent stay at the White Elephant has spoiled me for future trips. I don't want to stay anywhere else now! From the moment we checked in, the staff was unbelievable. They all knew our names and were constantly trying to make sure we had everything we needed without being overbearing. The room we were in had a large outdoor balcony with a nice side view of the harbor, it was a large room with a sitting area and then bedroom could be closed off with french doors and a nice size bathroom for 2. The weather was beautiful while we were there and we were able to enjoy sitting out on their comfortable lounge chairs overlooking Nantucket Harbor, while having lunch brought out to us... a delicious crabcake, the stay at the WE was just great!!!

We've stayed at the White Elephant previously and booked a one week vacation. Overall, the hotel was still as beautiful as it has always been, but the service was lacking somewhat. Not a deal breaker, but enough so that I wrote a note to the management.

The White Elephant has traditionally offered its guests a generous helping of port, cheese, crackers and fruit in the late afternoon in the library. Much to our surprise, a measly serving of port, cheese and crackers was offered in a small den. Even though we would arrive only 5 minutes after it starts, all the port, cheese and crackers were always gone! This was a disappointment.

Our room was lovely and had an ocean view which was lovely. Breakfast in the their restaurant was good, service was good but not great.

Housekeeping was adequate but spotty. Everyday, something was forgotten or incomplete (ie. used drinking glasses left behind, toiletries not provided, sometimes the turndown service was done-sometimes it wasn't, etc)

The staff were friendly and accomodating, but clearly needed more training from management.

I filled out the guest comment card and received an email response, however, it was 5 months later (we stayed there in June and received an email in November).

Management stated that they had difficulties finding hiring staff in a timely manner this year and that seems plausible. Hopefully, things will improve.

The hotel continues to offer free transportation and beach chairs/towels for its guests and that's a plus which we used daily. Nantucket continues to be as beautiful and quaint as ever.

Overall, it was a wonderful stay and we will definitely return.

  • Liked — Location. Beautiful view of the ocean and within easy walking distance to town.
  • Disliked — Staff needs training
