To put it bluntly, Nantucket, in addition to its great whaling history and beauty has become a community of tremendous wealth. This is self-evident simply by walking around and seeing the many estates and massive private yachts that dock at Nantucket harbor. To visit the island can be very expensive. As the title of this review would suggest, where we go on vacation, what we spend and the return we get on that expense requires some careful consideration.
There are several hotels on Nantucket to choose from. One of the reasons we decided on the White Elephant is because the hotel manager takes the time to respond to her guests Trip Advisor Reviews. Based on our travel experience this is can a very positive indication.
First, a very important tip for people who take the high speed ferry from Hyannis! When you check your luggage make sure you specify that you are going to Nantucket. The Martha’s Vineyard ferry loads up right next to the Nantucket ferry so your bags could end up on the wrong Island. A woman who lives on Nantucket and had struck up a conversation with us warned us about that. By the time we went to check they had already loaded our luggage so we spent the hour long voyage feeling very tense about that and were greatly relieved when we reached Nantucket to find our bags had arrived with us.
As you may have read on the other reviews, if the Hotel is aware of your arrival time they will pick you up, drive you to the hotel and help you with your luggage. As soon as we pulled into the hotel driveway there were several people on staff who warmly greeted us and escorted us into the lobby. We were surprised and delighted when the front desk informed us that they had upgraded our room to a Guest Suite and then introduced us to the gentleman that would assist us to our room. It turned out our room was on the second floor and provided us with a spectacular view of Nantucket harbor. Once we were settled in our suite it started to sink in that this was going to be a special experience.
The one concern we had was some of the less than favorable reviews on The Brant Point Grill posted back in 2012 so we had planned to go just once and then take the rest of our meals in town. As it was 2 pm by the time we were settled in our room and we were hungry we decided to check it out and have lunch. The restaurant was beautiful with a tremendous ocean view. Our lunch turned out to be excellent. The New England Clam Chowder and The Unbelievable Benedict Burger was great. Another dish we would recommend for dinner would be the 16oz USDA Prime Aged Rib Eye. Also, the bar makes one of the best Manhattan's I have ever had. After such a positive experience we ended up having most of our meals and drinks at the hotel. We would like to thank Crystal who gave us such a warm welcome to the Brant Point Grill and the following day when she saw us in passing and stopped to see if everything was going well during our stay. Also Trishana, Joseph and Deria as well as rest of the staff for making us feel so welcome.
The best way we can describe The White Elephant Hotel is understated elegance at its best. The focus of all who work there is the hotel guests and their well-being with a very high level of personal attention that is skilled and genuine.
Yes it is expensive but in our opinion well worth it.
