“Perfect downtown location, nice and cosy”
Reviewed August 5, 2010

The Ships Inn has a great restaurant in the basement which is cosy and romantic serving excellent food
Rooms are nice and cosy. All in different colors. They are spacious. The service is extremely friendly. A good breakfast with homemmade but a little greasy items is served in the morning. The Ships Inn is perfectly located few blocks away from the downtown area. It is fully furnished in Nantucket style.
The cosy lobby area can be a place for a break where coffee and cake is served in the afternoon.

The Innkeeper was quite relaxed about formalities such as check in/out time, the staff was friendly, the rooms were pretty, although our room's shower/bathtub arrangement was a little "quaint" (a freestanding bathtub with a shower curtain). The restaurant is well-regarded, although we didn't eat there, and the breakfast was a variety of home baked quiche-y or cake-like things or granola and cereal. Yummy. All in all, a very nice place.

I stayed here this past weekend with my boyfriend and his parents. We all had a wonderful time and loved the Ships inn and the innkeepers. Marylou was very sweet and sent us such a nice note when we made our reservation and remembered that we were coming in for a race (months later).

The rooms we very nice and the beds very comfortable. It was great being just a couple of blocks from the main part of town, but far enough off the main streets that it was nice and quiet.

The breakfast was wonderful - there was so much to choose from. They also served lemonade in the afternoons, that was great.

Overall, I think we will be back again next year and really enjoyed our stay at the Ships Inn

We've been coming to Nantucket for the past 10 years. My husband and I stayed here this summer(June ) while the grandkids stayed at Grandma and Grandpa's house down the street. The Inn is situated on a perfect side street perpendicular to Main Street. It is easy to walk to Main Street, the restaurants, and the Harbor. The front parlor is charming - "Nantucket Style" with period antiques and nautical and floral themes . The rooms are nicely furnished, light and bright. Since this is a converted Whaler's House, the stairs to the Upstairs Bedrooms are steep. If you have trouble with stairs this may be an issue. Our bathroom shower would lose water flow , and turn cold if other showers or water faucets were on. The Continental Breakfast was decent. The owners said Hello every morning ,and were as pleasant as could be. Overall it was a nice place to stay on Nantucket. Parking is on the street and can be hard to find which is typical on many streets around town. The price was easier on the wallet than some others, too.

We stayed at the Ships Inn for 4 nights in August. Defn. a busy season for the island and the Inn but we never felt like we were just a number. The Inn is what you would expect of a typical New England B&B. The inn keepers are kind, friendly and caring. The breakfast every morning was delicious, homemade and a bit different each day. The location is perfect if you want to be close to town.
My only complaints: 1. Coffee should be served in the lobby earlier than breakfast. I walked to town (2 min walk) for coffee each morning because the inn didn't serve it until 8am.
2. The bathroom in our room was probably the most unfuctional bathroom I have ever used. The shower was an awkward shape and there was nowhere to store your toiletries. But other than that we would defn. return and recommend it to friends and family.

We booked a place here on Memorial Day weekend. Every hotel on Nantucket was packed solid and we only got a room here because of a cancellation. Note that most of the hotels require a minimum 3 day booking during the summer. I would also recommend that you book early as there are limited numbers of rooms vs. tourists during the summer months.

The B&B is a quick 8 minute walk from the main dock up main street and a left right before the bank. There's a bicycle rack in the back to lock your bike. The plate of cookies and fruit were a nice considerate touch and there are also clean beach towels to be borrowed from the front desk.

The rooms themselves are rather small but that is to be expected. Depending on the room you get, the ceilings may be sloping downard in places, a possible problem for the tall. Showers and tub is functional but small. The rooms here are typical of all rooms in Nantucket.

Free breakfast was very good - muffins, cereal, pastries, sausage, ham, eggs. Dinner here is excellent though. It rivals some of the better establishments in Manhattan. It could very well be one of the top 5 restaurants on the island next to the Wauwinet and the White Elephant restaurants. We had dinner at both the Wauwinet and here. Both are not be missed. Do try to take the free Dock - Wauwinet shuttle for dinner. There's nothing like sitting on a beach having a drink while being served fresh lobster tail. Be prepared for the bill however.

All in all, the Ship's Inn was a good deal for $179/night during the peak season.

  • Liked — Restaurant, proximity to dock
  • Disliked — Pricy (all of the island is...)

The Ship's Inn in Nantucket is many, many good things, but could be great with some more effort and personal attention.

It has a great in-town location, around the corner from Main Street and up the street from Murray's Tuggery. It's in the home of a historic whaler and and a suffragette, Lucretia Mott. The food is good, with a fine breakfast (although making apple crisp without cinnamon and brown sugar misses the point). We didn't sample dinner but that was a mistake; the smells were delicious and guests appeared to be having a fine time.

For Nantucket, it was a good value, too, with fair prices and less money up front, minimum stay rules than other places. We were stuck up on the top floor though, with rooms less grand than the web site showed.

My main complaint was about the noise. We traveled with two children, and the Inn carefully checked their ages to make sure they were over six. The kids behaved themselves, but the Inn's other guests didn't, nor did the staff. Other guests were entertaining until the early hours of the morning, and the kitchen staff kept up quite a racket out back until very late. No one was home to supervise either the staff or the guests, spoiling our stay.
