“A Charming yet Stinky Motor Lodge with White Lattice & Hydrangeas”
Reviewed August 2, 2009

I just got back from a very pleasant Nantucket trip, it was half business, half pleasure. I had to find a hotel in the last minute and did lost of research, including lots here on TA. I read most of the bad reviews on The Beachside, and at first avoided even considering this location, based on the reviews. Then after discovering that 98% of everything was booked up, and The Beachside had some of the "cheaper" rates, I decided to go with 2 nights at the Beachside. I was actually pleasantly surprised because from the TA reviews, I thought this place would be a dump. It was quite nice... I thought the buildings, the rooms and grounds were lovely, and everything seemed to be maintained fairly well- especially the grounds. The room was an OK size, not big by any means, but a decent size. BAthroom was small, but ample. Room furnishings and bed were good. Good TV, furniture, etc.
Staff was very friendly and helpful, and called us Taxis whenever we asked. Also recommended restaurants. One of the key things about this motel was the location. An easy 10 minute walk into town. We walked everywhere and were fine with that. Except to and from the ferry. I had one really big heavy bag as well as a smaller bag, and even with wheels, there's NO WAY I'd want to haul luggage to and from the ferry terminal. I highly recommend taxis from the ferry to the Beachside. Taxi was $9 w/o tip for a 4 minute ride.
OK, Here are the Negatives:
1. The smell of the room— it was one of the nastiest mildew smells I've ever experienced. Opening all the windows and trying to get a cross draft was a temporary fix.

2. They said the pool would be open at 8 am. We tried to swim both mornings at 8, but pool access was locked until at least 9 am. By that time we were off for the day. Bummer. Major bummer. Walked by later in day around 4 and pool PACKED with kids. Small poolside area doesn't accompany 32 families very well.

3. Continental breakfast was decent, but packed the entire time.... kids loading up their plates because food was "free" (as one child commented) Also 5 year-old girls hogging toaster for 25 minutes, preparing toast and bagels as if they were home using their Easy-Bake Ovens. Granted they were at full capacity, and dining area is probably much quieter on a Tuesday morning in March.

All in all, It was a pleasant stay. Its not the White Elephant, but its not bad. Is it worth $332 a night? No. To me, location aside, this is a $99 a night motel. Bottom line? A decent place, with nice helpful staff, beautiful grounds, decent yet stinky rooms, relatively quiet and serene. Tidy Motor Lodege with nice New England Shingle and white wood trim and lattice look and feel. Decent Breakfast, re-stocked when needed. Nice lobby, not a long walk to room. GREAT location. I would stay here again, if under the same circumstances-- if I had no other option.

We found the Beachside to be a terrific value, considering its proximity to town and beaches. We were fortunate enough to find a terrific deal on the Beachside website for a single night stay ($189 per night). Being Massachusetts residents, we jumped on the opportunity to stay overnight on Saturday and do some exploring over a weekend. After booking, I read some of the other reviews on this website and began to get very nervous that we would be staying in a dive motel. Upon arrival, we immediately knew that some of the reviews here are a bit extreme and over-biased.

Our room (a cliffside room), happened to be clean and modern. We had a flat-screen LCD television, refrigerator, AC, coffee maker, iron and hair dryer in our unit. One interesting feature is the front door, which happens to be a set of full size french doors - something I have never seen at a hotel before. The room is roomy with high ceilings, and a bright yellow paint job with white trim. Our room furniture consisted of a Queen bed, desk, couch, coffee table, suitcase bench, dresser, and a set of coffee tables..

I do have to concur with some of the previous reviews regarding the cleanliness of the linens. It is clear that they wash their own linens, as some towels and sheets have little spots and stains here and there. They are, however clean and adequate, though enough to remove a star from our review.

The pool is clean and inviting. The beach (Jetties beach) is really just a few minutes walk away, and has a full service restaurant, snack bar and gift shop. Nantucket town is literally a 10 minute walk down the road, and we easily rolled our luggage directly from the steamship authority dock right to our room.

If you are looking for a place to stay over the weekend, we recommend this hotel. Check their website for deals before booking a $400 room.

I realize prices in Nantucket are out of control in July but I can't help thinking what I could get for $700/night (with taxes elsewhere). We did stay in a "suite" which meant a living room with two beds and a fold out sofa with a desk and a TV and a small add'l bedroom with a king bed and anotehr TV. Just one bathroom though. It is pretty clean but everything is old. The regular rooms are pretty visible from the pool area and they are pretty small and standard-looking.
I like the location - half-way between Jettys beach and town but I hated not having any food at the hotel (besides breakfast). When the kids are hungry at 3pm it is either Snickers from the vending machine or a 15 min brisk walk to town.
I did not find the staff friendly, and the breakfast was...OK. It usually frequently ran out of things and it took some time to bring more out. Everytime we would walk in (different times fo morning) they were out of bagels and would have to wait 10min to get more. Same with granola cereal, at times milk, etc.
Never stayed at other Nantucket hotels to compare but if you stay anywhere else in the world this was so not worth $700 (or even $400 or so for regular room)

Arriving - Quick checkin; Friendly staff in person; Room was clean. Sofa bed had used sheets and blankets. Yuk! Fortunately we caught the staff before they closed at 11PM for the evening (after that you have to call a number for an emergency).

Room condition - Bathroom door was horrible. Had to slam it in order to shut properly. Missing an outlet cover. Great modern flatscreen TV with DVD player (office rents or loans a limited supply of DVDs). Sleeping - mattress desperately needs to be updated! Very very uncomfortable sleeping. Adequate pillows.

Grounds - Absolutely beautiful! Lovely hydrangea plants in front and around the pool. Many sitting areas and unique touches for this basic hotel. They need to spend some more time inside the rooms!

Pool - Heated pool was very nice with fresh plush towels. However I was very disappointed that it was not available in the evening hours (closes before sunset at 6pm). Hotel requires a life guard but then again mandates that parents supervise children. I would rather have swim at your own risk than close the pool early.

Breakfast - Free contintental breakfast was adequate but was only open from 8AM to 10AM. We were ready to go at 630AM! Very poor variety of tea.

Misc - High speed internet was very good from our room. Nice porch (which once was a hallway -- overlooking the pool).

Location - About 1 mile from in town. A moderate walk (or an easy bike ride). About the same distance to Jetties Beach!

Price - Our room was $259 a night (on special -- normally $465). We only spent this because we needed to be on the island for a special occasion.

Overall - This is not elegance as some parts of the room was run down (e.g., radiator heater was rusted; bathroom floor cracked; tub backed up (which was fixed), mattress was extremely uncomfortable). For the price that you pay here you would expect A LOT more! If this hotel was located on the mainland they would be lucky to get $100 a night!

Pet rooms are available.

It is Nantucket and it is expensive (what isn't on teh island) but it was one of the few in town accomodations that accepted less than a 3 night stay. The Hotel was very clean and the staff were very friendly and accomodating. The nice things about this hotel are its location, parking, pool and AC. The continental breakfast was more than adequate with waffles, french toast, cereal, danish, yogurt, juices coffe and tea. The pool was very clean and the open space around the hotel grounds is nice for just sitting and enjoying some sun. We had a large room with a desk, one queen and a sofa and coffee table, there was a flat screen TV and more TV channels than are usually available in a hotel. The only suggestion I would have is to request a second story room if you are not poolside, the noise from above could be quite loud at times, most people had children traveling with them.

I have stayed at several of the hotels on the island and this is so nice, quiet, clean and reasonable considering it is Nantucket!

Staff does whatever they can to make things even better. Breakfast is great, pool is clean and well maintained.

Can't think of a darn think bad about it except they can't control the weather!

Keep up the terrific job!

We sailed to Nantucket during the annual Figawi over Memorial Day and booked this room so the crew could stay on the boat. I booked through Expedia and the ONLY option was $400 a night. Thought this was a little high thinking rooms were not available during this popular weekend but when I checked in even the staff couldn't understand the rate and said they could not change it. ??? We arrived back at the room late and the door key had somehow become deactivated. We finally got a neighboring room to call management because we initially went to the office where we found everything locked up and lights off. Apparently no one is in the office and if you are locked out of your room with the information on how to call the office after hours locked in the room, this could not have been more frustrating. Finally, thank you to a neighboring room someone finally showed up from management and opened the door. (No one is on duty in the office, they are in an actual motel room). For $400 a night you would expect a little more than a room that really needs to be updated. It was rather musty smelling with an annoying slope on the bathroom sink that when you sat bottles of shampoo or whatever, they would slide into the sink. The stopper in the tub did not hold water so someone in the party could not take a bath. My first trip to Nantucket. What a dissapointment. Will return but not stay here again.
