The Carlisle House Inn
Ranked #11 of 38 Nantucket B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 8, 2010

My boyfriend and I just returned from a great weekend at The Carlisle House Inn. After reading about our B&B options on Nantucket, we chose The Carlisle House for its location and high customer reviews. We weren't disappointed -- the inn was beautifully decorated, had a yummy breakfast of assorted fruit & home-made scones, and the King-sized bed in our room was way more comfortable than our mattress at home. Also, the Innkeeper was really nice about directing us to a bike rental shop and went out of her way to provide hot tea when we made a special request. We've been to a lot of B&B's in New England over the years, and The Carlisle House ranks right at the top. Highly recommended!

What a great find! I actually went with my fiance and a group of friends. We were immediately struck with the gorgeous floors and colonial paintings. The inn apparently has been there since the 1700s and it has incredible character. That being said, everything is kept up really well and it has all the modern conveniences you would want- a computer, HD tv... We stayed in a suite on the second floor that had a lovely living room overlooking the garden and a private bathroom. The bed was incredibly comfortable and we slept like logs both nights! Then you wake up to moist banana and pumpkin breads, buttery scones and pop overs! It's also a 5 minute walk from downtown and the beach- no noise issues, but definitely easily accessible to restaurants and bars. The hardest part of the whole trip was leaving.

Needed to getaway from the mainland for a quiet weekend. Heather, the Innkeeper, was fabulous. Recommended several great restaurants that were open (as January is off season, many were closed). Rooms are comfortable and well taken care of. Loved having the fireplace in my room!
Would love to come back and visit again in the Summer.

Do not be deceived by the first floor of this hotel, which is very nice. Stayed with friends in two separate rooms. Both rooms plagued by poor plumbing and electrical. Furnishings inconsistent with the rest of the hotel - furnishings in some rooms nicer than others. Room on the third floor I stayed worn out, tired furnishings, wobbly side tables, lamps that did not work, poor tv reception, old mattress with dead springs, and whole room smelled funny. Shutters that banged up against the house kept me awake. Slow drains in toilets sinks and showers in both rooms (toilets would not flush, shower pan and sinks all filled up to the top with dirty water while washing). In one of the bathrooms, drain cover was not affixed to the shower floor and moved all around the shower pan with water not going down drain and overflowing over the shower pan and onto the bathroom floor. Flickering bathroom ceiling light kept turning itself off repeatedly. This b&b is close to town but is in need of a capital improvement plan in our opinion. My friends and I were not comfortable in the rooms at all and tried to stay out and only come back to sleep. Ok to stay if there are no other alternatives but we will not be back.

Carlislehouseinn, Owner at The Carlisle House Inn, responded to this reviewResponded January 16, 2010

We regret that this reviewer did not communicate his dissatisfaction directly to us. Unfortunately, there was a plumbing situation that accounted for the back-up and odor described in the shower. It was corrected as quickly as possible by our plumber and (we thought) with minimum disruption to guests.

Had we known about the flickering overhead light, we would have immediately changed the light bulb (which was done when housekeeping discovered the problem after the guest checked out).

As new owners of this inn we are constantly implementing improvements, and we appreciate constructive feedback from our guests. Our goal is to make every guest as comfortable and content as possible while offering accommodations at a good value.

We stayed here for 2 nights. We are from the midwest and this was my 40th birthday present from my husband. The innkeeper Heather was great! Breakfast was fabulous and it was a comfy , cozy atmosphere. Would love to return someday. Thanks Heather:)

I have had the pleasure of staying at the Carlisle House on two different occasions, once in Polpis and once in Sankaty. Heather and her staff were very friendly and helpful, offering wonderful suggestions for sightseeing and dining. The rooms were very charming and comfortable, and conveniently set at affordable prices. The decor is historical and interesting, which really gives the inn an extra dose of character. Also, I have to say the beds were fantastic and I don't have a single complaint about my night's sleep. The breakfasts are outstanding with a wide variety of delicious treats -- homemade breads and coffee cakes, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, and more. My favorite part of staying at this quaint inn was the opportunity to mingle with the other guests staying there. One night after returning from dinner, my mother and I enjoyed the company of Heather and a few other guests in the parlor for an hour of lively conversation. The location is super convenient as most everything is in walking distance. Nantucket is a one of a kind vacation destination, and The Carlisle House Inn is the perfect place to experience all that this island has to offer. I highly recommend this inn!!
