The Maria Mitchell Observatory is open for star gazing and lectures. It is very educational for children and adults. The telescope is available, but you can't see too much through it. The lecturer was very good. I recommend it.

The aquarium is very small and there was not much to do for the cost to get in. My two year old was done with it in about two minutes. The touch take was nice but, there were only a few crabs and two large snails. The rest of the place consists of two shacks with some fish tanks in them and one round outside tank that you can look down into. I would suggest skipping!

We have read in the Nantucket newspaper that the Observatory will hold a family night, $30 per person. There was no further explanation at all about that event. We walked over and a nice young lady greeted us at the entrance. She said that we could walk in. As soon as we walked in, some crazy Russian guy jumped at us and started screaming: "Vere ar your children?" We explained that our children are at home. He started screaming and yelling that this program is designed for children. Mind you, there were 4 terrified people already sitting in the corning, 2 adults and 2 teenagers, probably 13 and 15. The crazy guy continued to scream and kicked us out. There were nobody else there and obviously nobody else was coming. There was no explanation what "family night" is. It was absolutely surreal. Like being in a Seinfeld episode with the Soup Nazi screaming: "No soup for you!" They should either give some medication to that Russian guy, or they should put a big sign on the Observation: "People without children are not allowed. Be ready for yelling!"
