“Worth a stop”

The whaling museum is worth a stop. Take the time to listen to the presentation on the Essex, the inspiration for Moby Dick. It is quite a tale.

“Informative”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 7, 2012

I would like to have spent more time here, but we only went over for the day, so we cut the time short, the Scrimshaw display is wonderful, the timeline is amazingly informative. Beautiful view from the top of the museum..

“A must see!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 7, 2012

This is one of the best museums I have been to a long time. If you have read accounts of the ill-fated Essex whaling expedition, it is even more fascinating. If not, it is worth going to the daily talk ("gam") about it. And if you miss that, it is still a great place to visit!

“Top of the list "Must See"!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2012

It was my 3rd visit to Nantucket and I had yet to visit the Whaling Museum. We went on a drizzly day. It was perfect. We spent at least four hours there. The presentations were exceptionally good and brought to life the history of the island as well as the whaling industry and how it impacted Nantucket when it was thriving and then when it was not.
The movie, Nantucket, was very interesting. Several in my group purchased a copy of it on DVD and have decided that we will read Moby Dick before our next visit to the island. A return visit to the museum is most likely.

We enjoyed learning about Nantucket's whaling history which helped us appreciate the surrounding town. Highlights for us were the Ric Burns film (a must see) and the scrimshaw collection.
