We started our climb of Mt Ramelau at 5am and walked with just the light from the full moon. The sun rose when we were about half way up and we had magnificent views all the way to the top.
The hike is a 10-15km return trip from Hato Builco. The path is steep in parts but not technical (no rock scrambling). A couple of spots are on lose soil so bring shoes with grip. Our guide suggested a 3am start so we could see sunrise from the summit but it was equally good to see on the way up. We took about 2.5 hours to get up and 2 hours to get back down.
The only downside is getting to Hato Builco. It's 90km from Dili but will take about 5 hours due to the condition of the roads. The last 18km (after turning off the main road from Maubisse) are particularly tough and took over 80 minutes each way. There's one guest house you can stay at - $15 each got us dinner and a bed for the night. Just turn up as it doesn't seem to be possible to make a booking. Bring something for breakfast because you can't get something there in time for a 3am or 5am departure.
