The entrance is not free. Please pay the little amount they charge (I think it is about 120 Macedonian currency per person). The guard often times is not there but please respect and put the amount on the counter.

The setting is beautiful, the frescoes are beautiful. We took the bus 28 from Skopje at 10:30 AM, got there at around 11:10 AM. The going back bus was supposed to come at 1:10 PM, the next bus was at 6:30 PM. It s Macedonia after all. The bus at 1:10 PM never showed up. After waiting for about an hour we called a taxi and for about 6 US$, 4 of us got back down to the city center. I went with my husband. The other two were random visitors.

The "village" is a tourist trap. The restaurant is fine but the new government dismantled everything and trying to put their own people to run the silver smith and other shops. It is disappointing.

I have visited the complex a few times it is opposite the famous complex Macedonian village in Gorno Nerezi. The chruch is very old and unique but it is not something special because there a lot of similar churches in Macedonia. There are two roads that lead to the church one is from Vodno mountain but It cant be used. And the one mostly used it passes through some of Skopje`s settlements it is very narrow. There is a regular bus line which goes to the church from Skopje. It is bus line number 28. Macedonians recognize part of the complex from the famous TV series Makedonski narodni prikazni, part of the older episodes were filmed here.

Very old and peaceful church with breathtaking views of Skopje. The church is free but you can make a donation. Very well kept grounds.

This church has stunning 12th century frescoes, including a Pieta very much like Giotto's famous one that my personal guide said scholars now believe Giotto modeled his Lamentation/Pieta on. The frescoes are unlike any medieval or early Renaissance frescoes I've ever personally seen at any other Orthodox church of any Orthodox tradition; each person looks completely unique and most of them have expressions. And the iconostasis is made of stone, which I had also personally not previously seen at an Orthodox church. The iconostasis is almost as stunning as the frescoes. I cannot recommend this church highly enough to others interested in visiting Orthodox churches and/or in art history.

Contrary to previous reviews, there was a sign at the entrance saying it cost two euros to enter; however, the person who was supposed to collect the fee was away when we visited but had left the church door open. There were no site guides when I visited (again, contrary to a few previous reviews) and I was glad I had come with a private guide as there were also no explanatory signs in any language. A small group was there when we arrived and started asking my guide questions.

I strongly recommend this place for even non-believers as I am sure that they even shall feel the powerful spiritual essence of this historical church.

Beautiful old church. In it you can find one of the rarest icons of Mary crying over Jesus's body. If you a lucky to see wedding ceremony there, so much the better.
