This has to be seen to be appreciated. Macedonia Square occupies one end of the Stone Bridge. Dominating all is the monument to Alexander the Great. He is mounted on a horse atop a column. The base of said column is surrounded by Macedonian soldiers in various warlike poses. The column is in a basin with a dancing fountain and lion statues on the perimeter.

Other statues are located around the square. These are reminiscent of Soviet realist art. Various heroes and emperors are depicted. Definitely unique

Huge monuments and very impressive and the fountain in the sumertime with music and lighting is so nice to sit and have a coffee beside. Some people will think it is too much but jusy enjoy it for what it is and don't think too much

Well Macedonia Square has always been the centre of the city where the new and old Skopje meets. Lately the square has gone through a huge face lift as tens of majestic statues have been built in and around the square as part of the megalomaniac Skopje 2014-project. Standing on the square you don't know whether to cry or laugh; millions of euros have been vasted on the statues and huge buildings in the neighbourhood. In one end of the square you have the old stone brige leading to the Old Bazaar on the other side of the river. On the opposite side of the square you have the recent "Arch-of-Triumph-copy". There are some restaurants and open air cafes where you can sit down and watch this madness.

It may be getting overloaded with statues, however. Perhaps when all the renovations are completed on the other side of the river, it will all come together. At any rate, it's a must-visit in Skopje.

Downtown Skopje is currently experiencing a renovation with many big new buildings in varies stages of completion. The square is very clean, lined with cafes, restaurants, bars, shopping places to sit and picture opportunities. In a couple of years downtown Skopje will be a very convenient, posh place to hang out. One thing though...there may be too many statues, the city should have spread them out a bit. : )
