“Old bazaar Skopje”
Reviewed December 7, 2013

Just returned from a few days in Skopje. The old bazaar is definitely a place worth visiting. There is a lot of building work on the river front but take a walk up to the bazaar and you get to see the authentic side of Skopje. Lovely old cobbled streets and tiny little shops. Well worth a walk through the stalls of the actual bazaar. The people are lovely and friendly and as others have said on here we felt totally safe.

“Old Skopje Bazaar”
Reviewed November 28, 2013

Loved walking around the cobblestone lanes, nice antique shops and have never felt more safe. Uniformed Police walkabout all around. Must try the tasty grilled foods. We stayed long hours walking through many shops selling gold, wedding gowns, quaint gift shops, shoe shops and lovely local freshly baked sesame pretzel. The Mustafa Pasa Mosque, XV century takes you back in time and so do the Orthodox Churches, Cathedrals and Jewish synagogues. Friendly Macedonians made this city a joy to visit. The Stone Bridge takes you across the river Vardar to the biggest Bazaar preserved in the Balkans.

“Nicest part of town”
Reviewed November 27, 2013

A lot of little shops, like for example the one of a fantastic guitar builder. We stayed there for a long chat with the old guitar builder and a musician and were invited for tea and later some local (homebrewn) liquor.

“Child-friendly, non-commercial”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

Given that Skopje's old bazaar is almost entirely a pedestrian zone, it is by far the most child-friendly part of downtown for an afternoon stroll. There are also a few nice art museums in the district, a beautiful old mosque, ancient ruins and more. While many of the goods in shops there are of low quality, there are a few authentic storefronts featuring old-world handicrafts and more specialty boutiques are popping up here and there. Good food and drink in this neighborhood are plentiful and diverse.

“Go back through time”
Reviewed November 20, 2013

Modern times and unfortunate division within ethnicities in Macedonia made this lovely part of the town pretty empty even during the day and especially during the night. have no worries, as it is quite safe to walk around and see different shops and crafts that most of us have already forgot. Most of grills there close early in the evening, but you can always find few working later in the evening. The word is this bazaar was a third largest during the Ottoman Empire, after Istanbul and I never learned who held a second place. Make sure to wander around, it may take you an hour, hour and half. And it is not so colorful as in Istanbul.
