Hotel Anja
Ranked #44 of 74 Skopje B&B and Inns
Reviewed October 4, 2012

The hotel is located in the city center, 15 minute walk to the bus station, 50 feet from the famous bridge and statute of Alexander, 5 mins walk to the old town bazaar, and on the river banks across from the new government building. Great price for the room.

Room #1 was directly above the Anja restaurant which meant you would hear the music till the restaurant closed at 1am. Furthermore, there was some sort of generator in the restaurant that hummed very loud and made it virtually impossible to sleep until it was shut off at 1am each night when restaurant closed (930pm on Sunday). The room was a little dirty, and very cold and the bathroom was tiny. The hotel runs sort of like a hostel, so keep this in mind when you arrive and check in at the restaurant or if you have any concerns during your stay as staff are difficult to locate. Yes, checkout is annoying also because you have to walk around the restaurant trying to find someone involved in hotel. A real annoyance if you checkout at 5 am when restaurant is closed and there is nothing but the security guard in restaurant. The rooms are all on the 2nd floor and the main entrance to these rooms did not appear very secure, the door handle itself appeared to have been recently pried and had not yet been repaired. This entrance is also connected to the shopping mall, so not secure and accessible to anyone. I was forced to leave a day early because i needed to get sleep.
I would not recommend this hotel unless you are on a strict budget, but even in that case i would say don't risk staying at the Anja.

The loud music and partying in the street at night made it impossible to sleep, so I wont come back. Apart from that it was very central and decent if you don't expect more than a clean bed and shower, wifi worked well.

My room at Guesthouse Anja was very special. It wasn’t situated in the hotel complex, but at the gable of the building at the first floor with a door straight out to a pedestrian street. The room was only finished for 2 months ago, so it was very fresh and well equipped and the internet worked very well. They had no reception, so the check in was at their bar downstairs and the room bill was paid to a man in the bar with the office in his pocket. The staff was very friendly. For the breakfast at the restaurant you could choose from a menu with several fixed alternatives, maybe a little poor, but OK. Guesthouse Anja is situated in the Centre of the town, near to the Stone Bridge with the Old Bazaar at the other side. The Macedonia Square with the giant Alexander the Great statue was only a minute away. If you want they can pick you up from the airport and take you back after your stay for 15 Euro per journey.

We have made a reservation for Anja, 3 weeks in advance based on the very good comments on Tripadvisor. And the hotel confirmed the rooms. We were travelling 4 adults with 2 kids at an age of 8, a clean and comfortable hotel in a walking distance to square, old bazaar etc. was the main criteria.
After spending 5 days in Ohrid, in the last 2 nights of our trip we were going to stay in Anja. When we arrived there at around 6:00 pm, after a whole day drive on the mountain road, Igor welcomed us and said, “ sorry you don’t have a room, it has been sold” . He said it is mistake made by his collegue and added all the nonsense and conflicting stories around. In any case we haven’t been informed until we get there, no mail or no call. Speaking in perfect turkish, he suggested to take us to one other hotel they own, Bianca, which is very close and they have rooms available. We have accepted to see it. He took us far far away from the square, where the houses and apartments started. And the place was very similar to those highway pensions, with a very small room with no window at all, terribly damp and moldy that you cannot even breathe in…
We said we cannot stay there, this is no where near what we have booked for and looking for… Then, the tone of the conversation changed. He was in “take it or leave it mood”. .. we have asked whether he can help us finding a more suitable place,a hotel or a friend he could call etc…He told us long stories around why this is a very good place to stay in ( a very rich area of the city, when we turn on the ac no mold at all, there is a shortcut that we could walk to city center etc.) without even listening to our concerns etc., but at the end , no help at all.. In the mean time becasue we have lost a lot of time, we were about to miss the time to deliver back the rental cars. We were squeezed !!!
While trying to sort out issues one by one, we have asked Igor, whether we can make up our mind in an hour. Because it was becoming late, and in case we cannot find a place to sleep in, as a last resort we could spend the night in here. As expected, there was a queu(!!!) for the rooms, and he was doing a favor in price bla bla, but he unwillingly gave us some time.. He left us in there, in the garden of the hotel.. In the middle of nowhere for us..… 2 kids, lots of luggages, and 2 cars to be delivered … if we were at the city center we could have looked for places by walk… but we are stucked…our only choice was mobile phones and internet..
The receptionist in the place where we are left, was very rude at the same time.. while we are trying to find an alternative place to sleep in, by calling numbers from internet from our mobile phones, the receptionist was implying that we cannot use wifi because we havent decided to stay there yet…she was really annoying… the pressure was great from all ends, cause in the mean time kids became so hungry, and more terribly they needed a pee… and guess what, no one helped … and thanks to guys from the car rental office, they have gave us two hotel names.. even called the hotels for us …we finally found rooms, 30% more expensive of what we have booked for previously… a place in the same shopping mall with Anja.. Hotel City Central International.. The hotel and the staff saved our day… although there are some issues, I will comment on, on their page separately…
All the nice things that has been said about the Hotel Anja and the staff, Igor and Elizabeta, has to be thought twice …when things are going well it is always easy to be helpfull.. But our experience was a terrible one.. I can tolerate the mistakes people make… but when people are in trouble becasue of those mistakes, I would then expect to see real help and support and friendlines..and help is not trying to convince me to stay in a terrible place, far far away from my needs, becasue I have no choice..!!!!
Anyway, be careful… make sure you have a valid reservation…. And call and check before you arrive.. although this does not guarantee your stay..!!

For a reasonable price this place delivers three big travel essentials: 1. Location, 2. Clean, 3. Breakfast. The entrance is a bit unconventional...you pick up your key at the Pizza/ice cream restaurant below the hotel. The entrance to the hotel itself is connected to the large downtown mall. (parking in the basement) The manager has worked in hospitality for a long time and told me he found that the two main things that really seemed important to travelers were "a clean room and a good breakfast". He set out to create a place to stay in Skopje that puts a little extra attention into both. The hotel is on the shores of the Varda, and when the construction is done there will be a beautiful view of the waterfront. Beware that on summer nights, the riverfront is a center of social life in Skopje, and if you don't like the noise, there is an option to get a quiet room inside the building away from the party. The central square of Skopje is a short walk from the hotel, and it is the perfect place to enjoy an outdoor cafe while watching the magnificent dancing fountain and enjoying the family atmosphere created by the citizens of Skopje coming out in the evening to enjoy the cooler air. The bus and train station are an easy 10 minute walk from the Anje, making it a good option for travelers using Skopje as a base to connect to the rest of the Balkans and Eastern Europe.

Room Tip: If you are looking for a front row to the night life in Skopje, the rooms facing the water front wil...

This is a clean hotel/b+b in central skopje within walking distance of all main attractions. Didn't like the fact that they did not issue me a receipt when I paid. I understood I paid at booking with 'bookings.com' as I gave my credit card information however I paid cash instead the night of arrival. Had to check out at 5am so had no breakfast but usually if the owner Ivan was there you would be offered something the evening before if it was only an 'Icecream'
However accomodation is good and spotless. Much better customer service when owner is present though.

The Anja is a dispersed hotel, with 10 rooms over the restaurant in 13th November Street, facing the Vardar river and the astonishingly tasteless new public buildings being erected on the far side. In addition, it has 2 apartments in the pedestrianised Makedonia Street and 4 more apartments in one of the towers over the shopping mall onto which the main hotel backs. I stayed for nearly two weeks in the tower in a roomy 1-room apartment with a view out towards Mount Vodno. The apartment contained simple cooking facilities, fridge, iron, etc. Breakfast is served in the main restaurant. The hotel staff were extremely helpful (they speak English and Turkish) and my apartment was well looked after. The hotel could not be more convenient for shopping or entertainment (bars and restaurants) and the rates were modest. I was very pleased with my decision to stay there and will be going back.

Room Tip: Since the apartments are divided up from larger communist-era apartments, they differ in size and am...
