Hard work but worth it for the views. The descending is quite scary. A cold beer waits for you at the bottom at the Consulate Hotel.

If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit my beautiful home, St. Helena Island, you must do Jacob's Ladder! It would be like going to Paris and not doing the Eiffel Tower if you do not attempt it!... it might be a little more challenging though, especially for those not fond of heights, but well worth a go! Good Luck! :0)

Now this is what you call a staircase!

Built to provide access from the harbour to the artillery battery at the top (itself built to stop French rescue attempts when Napoleons was incarcerated here) it is now a lung-busting must do. Pace yourself and 10 minutes is an easily achievable target.

The local kids use it as a massive slide or luge, no health and safety here and if they fall off on step 10 then they will fall all the remaining 689!

Great views from the Ladder of Jamestown, gives you a real understanding of the set up of the town and the colourful buildings which occupy it.
