“Charming b&b in a picturesque town”
Reviewed March 27, 2013 via mobile

Being exhausted from our travels, the wonderfully comfy beds to nap in, and quiet atmosphere if the allen house were exactly what we were looking for. The victorian feel of the house seemed legitimate, right down to the lamps. Our room was delightful. The only downside occurred in the morning. There was no breakfast. Or, rather, none at the Allen House. It was being served 3 blocks down at the other property owned by Ann and Allen. There was no hot water for tea in the morning. No coffee. But when we did arrive at the Amherst Inn for breakfast, it was hot and delicious.

Chocolates in the room and homemade cookies were nice touches. I recommend this B&B.

The 3 best elements of the Allen House are: 1) Warm, welcoming hosts, Alan and Anne, not obtrusive--just right in their approach, 2) Easy walking distance to the center of Amherst, yet not in the busy part of town, 3) Generous and healthy self-serve breakfast between 8 and 10 am (nice not to be forced to eat at a specific time and to be handed a plate of food you may or may not want such as the typical elaborate french toast one gets at b & b's).

When our existing reservation at an organic farm fell through at the last minute and in the pouring rain, Alan and Anne readily and warmly accommodated us--first night in the Loft (quaint, charming, very small as they told us in advance, excellent renovated bathroom--we loved the room except for the double bed which is too small for 2 people, again as they told us in advance), then in the Peach room (larger, comfortable bed, but dark and small bathroom that needs regrouting).

We became quite attached to the place and would stay there again when visiting Amherst. Treat yourself to a visit to the Emily Dickinson house up the road.

We follow TripAdvisor on all of our travels and while we read the negative reviews for this location and found nothing in our experience that resembled any of these comments. I seriously wonder if these folks actually stayed at the Allen House.

We arrived on the last day of our two week trip. The Allen House/Amherst Inn lodgings were the best of the trip and we wish we had scheduled more nights here. It was also the best value we had in our current travels.

Over the previous six weeks we have stayed in 13 Bed and Breakfasts and small restored hotels in Oregon, California, Maine, Vermont and Massachusetts. Of all of these, we thought the Allen House was among the very best for beauty, comfort and value. If you are an antique and architectural buff, these two houses are the best most thoughtful restorations of the Victorian era we have seen. Clearly, the owners invested a great deal of thought, effort and money in making what we had the chance to experience. Since we arrived early, the owners gave us a tour of many of the guest rooms where people had yet to check in, as well as the public rooms. All were equally outfitted with the most era appropriate and beautiful furniture and wall coverings and accessories. The guest rooms are all very good sized and felt spacious, which is not common. The inn keepers clearly take a lot of pride in their homes and were generous with answers to our questions.

The Emily Dickenson House and Museum is directly across the street and if you read the book ‘Emily’ they talk about the “house across the street.” It is the Amherst Inn, which has been updated since the drawings were made.

While we cannot give credit to the inn keepers, we were very fortunate to find another guest was a baritone opera singer and he kindly gave us a mini concert in the front parlor.

While often these older homes lack the modern conveniences, these houses are outfitted well to accommodate the modern traveler.

Room Tip: The Amherst Inn location is closer to downtown and we walked everywhere from there. Front rooms on...

We arrived in a heavy downpour but were immediately welcomed and felt right at home. While we enjoyed a nice cup of tea, the host, Alan entertained us with fascinating stories of the house. The inn iswalking distance from the Elements Spa where we enjoyed a hot tub and not far from some great restaurants. We were only able to stay one night and were sad to leave after a very comfortable night's sleep. Breakfast was excellent.

Treated myself to this great B&B in a perfect location in charming Amherst. The Peacock room (AKA the Walter Crane room) was elegant and the ambiance from this family estate restored with attention to detail as a labor of love from the inn keepers Alan and Ann was inspiring. You walk in the front door and step back into time. Great for a quiet time with a book, central stop for getting to know the area, and ask about the lovely family stories.

Stayed for three nights while traveling on business. The house is very clean and comfortable, while still retaining the character of a traditional victorian home. I have stayed at many Bed and Breakfasts in the Northeast. The Allen House rooms and hospitality are on par with the best B&Bs I have visited. The location is outstanding, privately set back from the street, but only a block from the downtown restaurants. Numerous restaurants within walking distance were reasonably priced and served fantastic food. The Allen House breakfast was wonderful. The home has two comfortable rooms for guest use and WiFi was excellent--faster than most franchise hotels I stay at. The owners were very accommodating and made me feel welcome during my entire stay. I highly recommend Allen House.

Room Tip: Rooms that face away from the street are quieter. My room faced the street. It was fall and weathe...

After a day spent moving my daughter in on her first day of college, it was a pleasure to relax on the porch adjacent to my room. Comfortable and clean, the Allen House is conveniently located to the center of Amherst and the quite wonderful Emily Dickinson House. After loading the car with bags and bicycle and driving up from New York City, i welcomed the opportunity to walk from the inn to restaurants, the farmers market and the local wine store. Ann and Allen, the owners, , serve a full and satisfying breakfast too. Most of all I appreciated Ann's warmth and helpfulness. She insisted on spending more than half an hour helping me to find alternative accommodations for a future weekend when there were no rooms available at Allen House. I unhesitatingly recommend the Allen House. Barbara M.
