“A small gem”
Reviewed January 2, 2014

Amherst College shows a small portion of its extensive art collection at any given time. It is well-annotated and varied, from renaissance works up through contemporary, as well as some items from antiquity. The summer program "it's cool at the Mead" is especially worthwhile,as are docent tours. No admission charge. The student led programs vary greatly...some are very poorly prepared and presented. Others are well- worth the visit.

“A Must-See”
Reviewed October 25, 2013

A beautifully designed museum of art, built with great heart and filled with wonderful works of masters artists from Renaissance Italy to the Hudson River Valley. A joy for art lovers and historians. Also has a small cafe.

“Small Art Museum in Amherst”

Surprisingly fine quality art collection with plenty of well known artists. Quite diverse with ancient coins, Assyrian Wall Reliefs, Greek, Roman and even an Egyptian piece or two. Mostly paintings from 18-19th centuries.

We went here with friends and thoroughly enjoyed the Mead Art Museum including the Spire right outside. There was an exhibit of Japanese earthquake photographs amongst the other art works.

“Outstanding small art museum”
Reviewed June 1, 2013

Small collection but first class artists' paintings and sculpture. Especially of interest are the early American paintings.
