Review of Mead Art Museum

This museum is so awesome. It is quiet and reflective allowing the patron to genuinely soak in any given work. A nice variety. Wonderful portrait of George Washington allows you to imagine him posing as if you are the artist. If you go with kids you may be followed by a guard the entire time but do your best to ignore him. A minor inconvenience given that it is free. Oh and the mid evil room where Robert Frost read hi poetry is stunning. You must go.

Right off the main campus quadrangle surrounded by freshman dormitories, this small museum has an original, lovely collection of art gems, especially American painting but also lots of other works you can't wait to discover. It's beautifully displayed, you can wander around at will and muse. Closed Mondays, but for many days during the week--open til midnight!

Small museum, but it packs a punch! Very fine collection, particularly of American landscapes. Excellent temporary exhibits as well.

I strolled to Amherst College one morning just to see what there was to do. I stumbled across the Mead Art Museum, and it was a pleasant afternoon love affair. There are works of art from all over the world, but also some that are near and dear to the college and town. The artists, while not always the most famous, do justice to their time periods. There is one room that is all oak or walnut panels, carved, with artwork, from the 1600s. A former Amherst College founder or alumnus purchased the entire room's contents and bequeathed it to Amherst College, where the curators have put it back together -- it's like stepping into another time.
