Owner description: Amherst Cinema is a non-profit, independent theater. Our mission is to inspire, inform and entertain through the universal language of cinema arts and to serve as a cultural and educational resource for all. The core of our programming at Amherst Cinema is first-run independent film and classic repertory. We show over 120 superb films each year - most are first-run gems not even considered by commercial cineplexes. Decisions about film selection are made by our programming experts who know film and who know our audiences, not - as with many multiplex theaters - by a central office in a distant location. HISTORY 1926: The Amherst Theater opened in a renovated livery building in downtown Amherst, MA. It screened many classic films and hosted occasional stage performances. 1955: the theater was sold to Samuel Goldstein and renamed Amherst Cinema. Through the 1990s, the building deteriorated due to a lack of basic maintenance. The theater closed in 1999. 2000: a group of local film buffs and arts lovers formed the nonprofit Amherst Cinema entity to save the historic structure from the auction block. With substantial help from hundreds of individuals, institutions and businesses, the group raised funds and developed plans for a cinema center. 2006: With help from hundreds of supporters, we raised nearly $3,000,000 for the Amherst Cinema's home. In May 2006, our nonprofit organization broke ground to build a new, state-of-the-art, three-screen cinema. The Amherst Cinema opened November 22, 2006. 2013: A new studio theater was opened adjacent to the main building.

“A great place to see independent films locally in Amherst”

This is a nice little theater right in downtown Amherst. It is within easy walking distance of all the downtown restaurants and bars and consistently shows high quality independent or limited distribution films that would be impossible to find within 90 miles if it were not for this place.

“Top notch films and non-GMO popcorn with real butter”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2013

This theater is a class act. They screen top notch independent films, and have newly renovated and comfortable seating (which can be rare for theaters that show non-mainstream releases). They also have a superior snack bar, which includes non-GMO popcorn with real butter, fresh baked goods, and excitingly unexpected beverages like hard cider. We saw "Enough Said" here recently - James Gandolfini's last film. It was good - melancholy and thought-provoking.

“Great films”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2013

We live about forty five minutes away. We make the trip often to the Amherst Cinema Arts Center because we'll get to see films not shown elsewhere in our area. The staff is always polite and helpful. We have enjoyed so many movies here. It's a gem, prices reasonable, and we recommend it highly!

“Memorable”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 25, 2013

Loved this wonderful cinema. Located across from the public library, nearby shops and froyo establishments, we were able to see two current documentaries that might be otherwise hard to view in a larger multiplex. Wonderful opportunity to see films you might not see otherwise.

“Outside the mainstream”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2013

So many movies, so little time! Passing through, we stopped in to see a movie that isn't playing near home, and randomly picked the movie that was in the Studio Cinema, a 25-seat nook of a cinema. It was a small movie on a small screen, but it was wonderful to have the chance to see it with an audience. Prices were quite reasonable compared to an anonymous cineplex in a big city. Only disappointment was that apparently they offer fabulous baked goods that are so popular they sell out, so we didn't have an opportunity to sample the upscale concessions. If we lived in town, we'd be regulars.
