We did not have such a great experience at the Amherst Inn, which is down the street from the Allen and run by the same people. We'd hoped for a relaxing weekend with lots of sleeping late, but our first floor room was next to the kitchen and the dining room, where breakfast is served at 8, and we were not warned of this ahead of time. The inn is beautifully decorated, with authentic furnishings in very good taste, and I would recommend it to anyone who dreams of staying in an old house full of antiques. But our room was incredibly dusty - the corners looked like they hadn't been vacuumed in weeks, and there were clots of dust on the extension cords down there, and dust on the phone, clock radio, etc.; I put my computer case down on the floor, and when I picked it up later, it was covered with dust. The staff did their best, but they didn't really get things like not changing the towels until *after* you've taken your shower . . . .And some of the towels were frayed and threadbare. We'd been looking forward to luxuries listed on the website like "fine Swiss chocolates" and free wireless access; what we got was 2 rather stale Nestles kisses and a new wireless system that wasn't working. It could all have been funky and charming, but at $175/night, we felt ripped off.
