My daughter and I stayed one night while visiting colleges. This motel is situated on a wooded hillside (the sign is partially obscured and we missed it the first time we drove by). It is not new, but the room we were in was clean and quiet, the beds were comfortable, and all of the towels one might expect were in the bathroom. This was good, because the staff left at 8PM and returned at 8AM. The motel is located within walking distance of downtown Amherst, Amherst College and UMass.
Although lacking in some amenities, The Colonial Inn was value for the money.

I was first placed in a "smoking room"--covered literally ceiling to floor in smoke stains with ashes left on the floor, not to mention the smell. The helpful staff moved me to a "non-smoking" room, which was less dingy (slightly). Within the first two hours in the new room, I killed three bugs and located multiple spiders nests in corners. The low price isn't low enough to excuse grimy rooms.

had a decent stay, nice to be within walking distance to town center & umass. the firm flat beds were not comfortable at all and need to be replaced. better rates than all the hadley motels on rte 9. ice machine was broken, free lobby coffee was great the first day but nothing but hot water with a faint taste of tea the next two days. Beware: the front desk closes at night. It wasn't an issue for us but would have been if we had no car.

It was not the cleanest, certainly not the most comfortable, but close to downtown and adequate for a one night stay in a college town. Bring your own blow dryer as they can't lend one. In room coffee was pretty good. No fan in bathroom.

I arrived late after eleven hours of traveling, after the office closed, and was directed to check in at a local Howard Johnson, also owned by the owners of the University Lodge, a ten minute drive away. Once I arrived at the room, I noticed there were no bath towels, just a bath mat and a face towel. No hotel employees were around, so I had to wait until the morning to go to the office and ask for towels.

Otherwise, the room was adequate, fairly clean and in a quiet location. I chose this motel for the fair price, $68 a night for their off season but it seems the service is here is less than professional and does not deliver even the minimum one would expect at this price.

We stayed here for a soccer tournament in Amherst. Our main complaint was about the toilet paper. When we arrived, there was only a half of roll in the room. When we asked for more, they said that they would have some for us later, which we did not recieve until the next day. Also in our room we dd not recieve any facecloths. Another thing was the lights. We got in there and turned on a light and it would not stop flickering. After talking to other guests, this was happening in other rooms too. There was no internet access at the hotel, however they did allow you to use their computer in the lobby. Although, it was very very slow which made it so you couldn't even use it. For the event we were at this weekend, the price was raised to a excessively high price which was $150 a night. That is unfair for such little this hotel offered.

Starting with the positives, the front-desk staff were friendly and helpful. The location is nice and central in Amherst, although we had a very hard time finding the motel because of confusing windy streets (not the motel's fault, of course--and we got a great tour of Amherst driving around!). (Just arm yourself with a map or ask for directions before going here.) The price was also very reasonable. Also, Amherst is a very enjoyable town to visit, and it's worth staying overnight if your teenager considering college in this area. As for negatives, our room was dark (under an overhang) and had an unpleasant mildewy smell (maybe because it never got sun). There were 3 of us, but only towels for 2 (but the staff quickly fixed that). The remote to the TV had been broken and fixed with tape. Altogether it seemed rather depressing though adequate. Perhaps the sunnier rooms were nicer. I would try to stay somewhere else next time, but in a pinch would go here again. It served its purpose (giving us somewhere convenient to stay while visiting Amherst College).
