Basic, bare bones room. Carpets and furniture are from the Richard Nixon era, or earlier.
But it's under $100 and you can walk to downtown.

Nothing here to attract rock stars or put you in any type of romantic mood.

First room we were assigned to had not been cleaned by housekeeping!

Remember to lock the door!

Room Tip: Upper level is said to have better internet service

Stayed here for a couple of nights as needed to be near the university for start of term. The rooms are okay - bit basic but perfectly good for what we needed for a couple of nights sleep. We were on the upper level - which seemed better. Didn't realise they had the internet until reading the other reviews after. Great location for the university and for walking down the road to main town Amherst, where there is wifi in abundance and a fine range of bars and places to eat. Did find the blankets a little thread bare.

Looking at the reviews, I see a large price difference, which makes sense, between the on-season and the off-season.

There is one gotcha, the office closes at 9pm and the lights go out. But you can check in at 10PM, as we found out, by doing it. We had no idea the office closed at 9 until we arrived.

Room and building are older, but they are comfortable and I didn't have any problems with the housekeeping. Internet is slow, but not impossible, don't bother to try to stream, they haven't the bandwidth.

So I can't say anything about the school year status, but it was fine and rather inexpensive for the summer season. Really no complaints, nothing great, gets +1 for economy.

Moving my son into a new house, I needed a quiet night's sleep. The University Lodge was perfect. Quiet, clean and, at $80, a bargain! A couple things to be aware of. First, the office closes at 9 PM, so you need to check in before that. Second, the internet is slow, very slow. If you want to get work done that requires internet, you'll need to pay another $40 or $50. Ice machine is a little obscure, but keep looking. It is there!

Room Tip: Rooms in back are first floor, but more open and airy.

This motel is in walking distance to the University of Massachusetts, and that is probably the only reason why one would stay in this somewhat old place. It looks like it hasn't been refurbished for more than 20 years or so. It is a rather basic accommodation, complimentary wifi is available, but no breakfast or any kind of room service, just a bed. Given their central location, I wonder why they are not trying to make the place a bit more attractive.

Room Tip: Rooms on the 2nd floor are better

We needed a reasonably priced place for one night in the Amherst area, and the University Lodge met the bill. We had to check in through HoJo because we arrived later in the evening, but that went fine. The hotel and furnishings are older but the room was sufficient, and we enjoyed staying in the university area.

I have to travel up to the area periodically and this motel is by far the least expensive. Classy, sophisticated and modern it is not. The staff isn't even particularly helpful. More apathetic than anything else. However, lodging in the greater Amherst area is ridiculously over-priced; I've done the research.

Positives: The University Lodge is within walking distance to the downtown area, so you can stroll on over to the pubs and bars and not have to worry about driving back to your motel room and killing someone while sauced. If you're taking public transit to Amherst, such as train or bus, the location is very convenient. Contrary to other reviewers, I had no problem with Internet access and was able to get some work done at night. Stayed in hot weather and cold weather and temperatures were always okay. I've had to cancel and alter reservations and never had a problem with lost info or unwarranted charges. Very accommodating.

Negatives: Not disgustingly dirty, but the housekeeping is not going to win any awards. I have never encountered bugs here and, frankly, I think the roach spotter probably saw some innocent little creature that wandered in from the nearby woods. No breakfast, but you can walk to a number of good bakeries. Other guests not always the most considerate, especially in the parking lot. Also, not going to win any interior decoration awards, but, hey, who cares?

Room Tip: If you can, visit when school is not in session. The room prices fall by half. I paid $120/night in...
