“Good drinks but over priced and crowded”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2014

I recently went to Amherst Coffee on a Friday night on a double date. The atmosphere is nice but it is small, which adds to it's charm but takes away from the comfort-ability. My boyfriend and I asked the bartender for drink recommendations. We told him what we liked and he said he's make us drinks to match our tastes. Almost an hour later, he went to the bathroom and saw us at our table and remembered out drinks...Once we got our drinks, they were good but not worth the hour wait and $10 for a small whiskey sour.

“Above average coffee, above average prices”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 7, 2013

The coffee is pretty good, with a choice of flavours (sic), but is does seem a little expensive considering they don't do free refills. Cakes and cookies are nice too.

The main problem is finding a seat (late morning); most tables set for two or four are occupied by one person, one laptop and a back-pack. I assume at this end of town they are more likely to be Amherst College students than UMASS and they do stay a long time on one cup of coffee.

The staff are pleasant but not effusive - maybe they also wish some customers would move on. The custom seems to be that you clear up your crockery before leaving.

“Overpriced for a sub-par cup of coffee”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 20, 2013

Stopped by on our way out of town for a cup of coffee for the road. Based on the high prices and upscale atmosphere my expectation dial was turned up high. A 16oz coffee was $2.57 which is rather high to begin with, even for premium coffee, but I was willing to give it a shot.

They had three available roasts; light roast, light roast, and ultra- dark dark roast. I opted for one of the light roasts since lighter-to-medium roasts are typically a safe bet. The service was good, they were friendly and didn't give the "I'm expecting a tip" look.

The coffee was one of the worst I have had. At first I wasn't sure whether it was burnt or mixed with baby powder. The flavor was very off, almost metallic with a dry aftertaste.

Since coffee can change cup-to-cup, roast, and brew... I am willing to give Amherst Coffee another try just to see if it just happened to be the cup a received at this visit.

Overall, an average experience.

“Very good local coffee shop”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 15, 2013

This is a very good local coffee shop in this small college town. Being from San Francisco, I am pretty spoiled when it comes to coffee, and honestly, this is not up to the standards of a Blue Bottle or Four Barrel, but the fact is that it is a really good local spot. I would take it over both a national franchise brand and most local "indie" operations any day.

“The Best Coffee Around”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2013 via mobile

Amherst needs this place. Their lattes are so good that they need no sweeteners. They have a great, well thought out selection of food & treats.
