“Beautiful rail trail in the Berkshires”

Reviewed August 29, 2012

This 10 mi. one way trail has wonderful scenery, with mountains, lakes, a bubbling brook and offers great cycling exercise. Just one steeper climb out of Adams, MA (but a great downhill into it). If you start at the Lanesboro, MA trail head near the shopping mall, there's a very good port a john and good parking. Adams has a great Visitor's Center at the other end of the trail and some good restaurants. Try Angelina's Subs for good hoagies. There's a great ice cream/frozen yoghurt shop on a near by street parallel to the end of the trail.

This western Massachusetts bike trail is a very nice trip for the pleasure seekers who would like to get out and enjoy a leisurely ride without a ton of effort. The 11 mile long (22 mile round trip) trail starts in Adams, MA and ends in Lanesborough, MA. Although the description is "flat", I would highly recommend starting on the Adams side as there is, what I would estimate, 2-3 degree incline almost the entire trip to Lanesborough. The return trip is much easier as you are traveling "downhill" almost all the way. There are plenty of places to stop, and a portion of the trail parallels a lake which is very nice. I would recommend this trip for all levels of bikers.

We did the rail trail on bicycles and had a great time. It's 11 miles long, with plenty of entrances and exits along the way if you want to leave the trail. Or, if you can't ride anymore, your spouse can go back to get the car and come rescue you. We didn't do that, but it was in the back of my head as an option since I haven't ridden a bicycle in many years. I did make it halfway through and then turned around, so I did about 11 miles and was very proud of myself.

The trail is wide enough to fit all of the bicyclists, joggers, walkers and roller bladers without too much having to move to the side.

The views are beautiful as there lakes, trees, boaters, etc. The one downfall was the goose poop that you'll have to navigate around in some areas.

I highly recommend this as a safe place, off the road.
