“Dark and Dingy”
Reviewed August 28, 2012

There are actually 3 hotels under one reservation system. We stayed at the Maryland Inn, described as the "crown jewel." If this was the best one, I would hate to see the other two! The rooms (we had two as the first had numerous plumbing problems) were very dark. The carpeting and furniture were beat up and did not look clean. I did not want to walk barefoot on the floor nor sit on the furniture. The window air conditioners ran constantly. Although there is an elevator, there are steps that must be negotiated to get your luggage to the room. The bell men are busy shuttling cars around and were not that anxious to help with the luggage.

That said, if you want to stay in the historic district there are few other choices--only a couple of small B&Bs and the Marriot, which we did not check out. Parking is impossible so if you don't stay in the district you end up taking a shuttle bus to and fro. Perhaps this is why the Historic Inns remain so popular.

Room Tip: Tell the reservation agent if you have trouble with stairs.

What we didn't realize when we made the reservation was that they have multiple buildings. Once we checked in we had to drive with the bell boy so he could park our car...a little strange. The hotel was not thet clean considering the rates we paid. Annaplis is a beautiful city and the hotel is in a great location; just a short walk from the shops, restuarants and the Naval Academy.

Dear Badrock27:

Thank you for your feedback on your stay. While I was glad to read you enjoyed our location I was disappointed you felt the hotel was not clean enough and I apologize for that. I will share your feedback with our Executive Housekeeper.

With regard to us having three buildings we will continue to reinforce this through our website verbiage on our home page, through emails and conversations. We work very hard to be very specific and “upfront” about this and will continue to be so. Thank you for your comments in this area.

Sincerely,

Althiugh the service staff at the front desk were generally helpful and apologetic, the overall experience has been poor and although I have booked 7 nights and paid through Hotels.com I am seriously considering to find another hotel. They put us in Maryland inn. The 1st room they have us was so small we had to ask for another. The 2 nd room had dirty sheets sawdust all over one wall and a bathroom door that couldn't close. A staff came and brough fresh bed sheets but it was obviously he didn't know how to make the bedding. When we returned today to the room, the sawdust remained. The towels looked old ans the aircon is noisy and old There is no newspapers and no carparking. While checking in at Calvert, you need to bring out own luggage to the assigned inn. Overall most disappointing.!

Dear Su8108:

Thank your feedback. I am sorry that you did not have a pleasant experience while at the Historic Inns and I appreciate your comments. We work diligently with third party agencies such as Hotels.com to ensure they know what room types are available through their website and will continue to do so.

I will share your comments with appropriate members of my team as we obviously made a mistake in your room assignments. Thank you for telling me; we will do better.

If you are a fan of historic buildings converted to upscale hotels, then we highly suggest staying at the Historic Inns of Annapolis. The rooms were clean, well maintained and distinct. We specifically stayed at the Maryland Inn, right on Main St so it was very convenient to access the main thoroughfare of shops/restaurants that make up historic Annapolis.

The only 'odd' part of our stay had to do with the service provided. You see, the 'historic inns' are represented by three different buildings, located in three different locations of the historic area. Check-in and valet are only located at one building - the Calvert building. The other buildings are pretty much not staffed or minimally staffed - from what we could tell. So if you were staying at the Maryland Inn, like we were, you have to drive to the Calvert Building, check-in, then drive to your hotel and meet the valet/bellman there. It was a very odd setup and ultimately seems inconvenient for the guest.

Bottom line - if you want a 100% great experience, book at the Calvert house. That way you don't have the play the game of finding where your room is :P

Room Tip: Book at the Calvert House to avoid unnecessary runarounds by the staff.

Stayed in the Maryland Inn. Great location in a fantastic old red brick building. Just a short walk from the shops and restuarants of downtown annapolis. Little ways walk to the water. Short drive to the Naval Academy. Room was just a little bare. Lots of space though.

We stayed there during graduation week. Our room was in the governor Calvert building. It was a bit confusing as there is more than one location but staff is more than helpful. Each room is different. It has the feel of a B&B without the creepy shared space. The rooms are beautiful in the historical sense. The valet parking is very convenient. The location is perfect. Everything is within walking distance: food, museums, the waterfront, etc. If we return, we would definitely stay there again.

If you like old inns, you can't go wrong here. We stayed at the Maryland Inn at the top of Main Street that leads straight down to the harbor with shops and restaurants along the way. It is a little walk to the water but this location is a great center of operations with proximity to the upper hill circles, the other two Inns and other sites with a simple mini market across the street and a CVS down the street to cover all of the bases. The staff is wonderful and the inns are clean. The rooms were great, again, considering the history of the building. The bathroom was modern with current tile and newer fixtures, very clean. The furniture was fine and the bedding current. Ok, the wall-to-wall carpeting was loose yet clean and this is be tolerated in moderation in places like this and thus did not detract from the stay at all. We will return in future visits to Annapolis.

Room Tip: If you can afford a suite, do it.
