“Keep walking down restaurant row”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2014

If you are in Annapolis and decide to cross the bridge into Eastport to explore restaurant row I would pass by Blackwall Hitch unless your are just looking for a drink. The management of Blackwall Hitch did an excellent job of transforming the Old Rockfish. The interior is really charming, done well, and the addition of a deck on the second floor overlooking Annapolis is really nice. So if you are just looking to have a drink both levels are very inviting.
However, after this the rating goes down hill. I have eaten here twice and both times the food was very bland. They describe it very well but it just doesn't meet it's expectations. Even the desert, supposedly a chocolate brownie sundae tasted like dry chocolate cake.(how do you blow a brownie?).
The staff definitely needs some training, from the hostess who refuses to seat you on the upper deck, even thou there is plenty of empty space and there supposedly no reservations accepted for this area, to the kitchen which gets so backed up they stop seating people even thou there's tables available.
So if you decide to cross into Eastport, make a left at the light and enjoy the likes of the Boat Yard, Lewnes, Chart House or Ruth Christ or make a righ and enjoy Vin 909 or Adams Ribs and know that any of the above will be able to offer good food, trained staff and an enjoyable time.

“Great lunch menu”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2014 via mobile

I stopped in recently with a friend for lunch. Crab dip was delicious, eastportabella sandwich was also delicious. The pineapple upside down cake was served warm with caramel sauce - only improvement I would make to that was a la mode.

Lunch sandwiches come with a fries or orzo option. Do the fries - the orzo doesn't have all that much flavor to it.

While our waitress was very nice, she wasn't big on checking in. For a quiet lunch hour, I expected a bit more from her. She never refilled out water pitcher and I am a big water drinker. Everyone on staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, however, so I can definitely let that go.

This establishment is a definite improvement over the former restaurant that was here. I can't speak to the dinner fare, but I highly recommend for a nice casual lunch!

“Great renovation, poor execution”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2014

We had dinner at the Blackwall Hitch last weekend. The good: The decor is really first class - it is verybeautiful. The hostesses were prompt and friendly. The crowd was smartly dressed, well most were. There were a number of men-children wearing their shorts and sandals. Seriously - why do the grown men in this town feel the need to wear shorts and mandals to dinner?! The bad: The noise level is deafening. It's rather difficult to carry on a conversation because it is VERY loud and this was prior to the band starting. The waitstaff seemed to be on Valium or perhaps they were zombies? They all wandered/stumbled around in a haze barely noticing the customers in their sections would like to have drinks, food and maybe a little service. Management needs to step up the training...this is not a Green Turtle, and the prices are decidedly NOT Green Turtle prices. When you are paying 20 dollars or more for an entree you expect commensurate service. That was simply not the case here. Our entrees were good (shrimp and grits, prime rib) but the caprese salad had crunchy tomatoes. Tomatoes are IN season right now! Why were they crunchy?

I do hope management reads the reviews and make some corrections because The Blackwall Hitch could be a really good place!

“Time will tell, but....”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 19, 2014

You'd think new owners spending $4M+ in renovations would make sure that the food and service were dialed-in before opening. I assume these owners know the business, but the service was virtually embarrassing and the food was better then ok, but overdone burgers and over-charred steaks should never leave the kitchen. I hope the owners never stop trying to improve and don't get comfortable with the current performance just because business may seem good. Once the word gets out that the service and food are mediocre it will only be a matter of time before their weekly revenue starts dropping off and then the death spiral begins when they start cutting costs. I'd love to see this place succeed, but time will tell...
