This is our GO/TO restaurant for the kind of food you just cannot prepare at home. Jalapeños has a wide variety of tapas (beef, chicken, chorizo, and some of the best fish tacos, lightly battered quick fried green beens with honey mustard chile sauce, and pequillo peppers), served daily from 4-7 pm (4-6 on Saturdays) and great margaritas and a really nice choice of Spanish wines. Fridays and Saturdays, there are specials that truly are special - never on the regular menu and generally unlike any of the "standards." Fish, in season, are usually a great option. The mussels steamed in garlic wine are a treat (ask for bread to sop up the liquid. They'll know what you mean!) The guacamole is prepared fresh and they offer a half portion for a party of two.
The wine list is broad but not overly extensive, and reasonably priced: delicious albariños with the milder fish dishes, light grenaches with chicken or salmon, and the richer riojas for complexity and to balance the bolder dishes.
The staff are generally long-term employees who start with little English and work experience, and learn both good English and excellent service technique as they gain experience. Some of our favorite staff started at bussing and setting tables and keeping water glasses filled, and are now greeting and seating their long-time customers.
During the winter, on Thursday evenings starting at 8:30, there's late night tapas with live entertainment - usually a jazz trio or a guitarist/singer, and several times a year, flamenco dancers!
