“These folks know their crab!”
Reviewed May 2, 2014

This hotel based restaurant is a very nice surprise. The decor is urban and very chic, but the best part was the food. The crab bisque was superb - they show you the crabmeat before pouring in the broth. Featuring a touch of sherry, it was perfect.

For dinner I moved on to the crabcake sandwich. It was made of delicious bluefin crabmeat, expertly prepared to feature the taste. Among the best I've tasted. The sides and service were fine - this place features indoor and outdoor dining, and appears to be very popular for group happy hours. A very nice experience -

Oh - as for the garlic fries - well, you were warned!

“waitstaff and food need help”
Reviewed March 31, 2014

Our young waiter had no idea how to do his job. We had to ask for the specials - he mumbled them looking down at his notes so that we could hardly hear them and it was clear he didn't know anything about food. Orders were wrong; flounder special was overpriced and tasteless, bread never came although we asked twice. Waitstaff needs to be trained especially at these prices.
We eat out a lot and know value - this place is not worth the money - don't go!

“Good Onsite Hotel Restaurant”
Reviewed March 5, 2014

You and I both know that most onsite hotel restaurants aren't that good. There are exceptions (John J. Jeffries at the Lancaster Arts Hotel comes to mind), but there aren't many. I think we found another in West Kitchen & Tavern.

And in a town like Annapolis with dozens of dining options across the whole range of prices and cuisines, a hotel restaurant is probably not your first choice.

We started out for Lemongrass (an excellent Thai restaurant I've also reviewed), but the wait for table was going to be too long for a pair of hungry diners.

We returned to West, were shown to a spacious booth, and settled in.

West is employing some degree of "farm to table" - trying to use local purveyors where possible. Note this translates into a more limited menu - if your travelling party includes wildly-divergent dining preferences, they might not all be satisfied.

My spouse's garlic and herb shmeared tavern steak was a perfectly cooked, beefy and tender hunk of bovine goodness, and came with some really good garlic fries.

My grilled, sliced duck breast over barley and fennel was perfectly cooked to my medium-rare specification, with crispy, crackly skin.

The room is nice, noise levels are reasonable, with plenty of distance between tables so you are not privy to the conversation at the next table.

They serve what appears to be a nice breakfast, but before you do, try Miss Shirley's - its a couple blocks down the street and not to be missed.

“Good food but extremely slow service”
Reviewed January 12, 2014

The food is great but we had to ask multiple servers for our beer and waited forever for the check (even after we specifically asked for it).
