I've heard about Avery island for years, and so was glad to get here. This started out as a private preserve for the McIlhenny family of Tabasco fame. They've owned the island for well over a century. Many plants were imported, the gardens planted. Now anyone can visit -- for a fee. You drive through the grounds, and can get out, walk, take photos, when you see something that catches your eye. The highlight of our trip was roseate spoonsbills, and an otter fishing unperturbed for over 15 minutes in a pond while we watched.

Head here after touring the Tabasco factory. The grounds are beautiful and we wished we had brought a picnic like another family we observed. Bird City was fun to watch as nesting has begun. Friends tell us once the babies hatch, the bird chatter is deafening! Pretty drive, small alligators sun themselves near the beginning of the garden. A per car fee would be more fair than the per person price they charge but don't let the price dissuade you.

The Jungle Gardens on Avery Island, LA are well worth a visit. The variety of trees and plants is astounding. The setting is very enchanting and the high probability of encountering a wild alligator or two in their environment adds a bit of adventure. The bird life is incredible especially the nesting white herons in Bird City...a wondrous spectacle. You can drive the entire facility. It's best enjoyed by getting out of your car along the way often. For the most part It is accommodating to folks with disabilities or who have difficulty walking.

After touring the Tabasco factory it seemed like a natural thing to tour the Jungle Gardens. They were right next to the factory. This attraction consists of a short drive (about three miles) through the gardens to see live oaks, beautiful gardens, swamps and little alligators (at least we only saw little ones, ha, ha.) You can stop along the way to view some of the specialty gardens and see the "Buddha" overlooking the scenery.

What a great time my family had here. You get to see the rich history of the Tabasco brand and it's influence all over the world. The souvenir mini-tabasco bottles are a bonus. The shop has quite a selection of Tabasco influenced items (Coca-Cola, Ice-cream and peanuts to name a few).
Don't forget to stop by the bird sanctuary for a nice view of the egrets on the island. We had a great time. Also, don't forget to get some great beans and rice from the food vendor next door. It's a good opportunity to use your free mini-tabasco bottle :)
