I've heard about Avery island for years, and so was glad to get here. This started out as a private preserve for the McIlhenny family of Tabasco fame. They've owned the island for well over a century. Many plants were imported, the gardens planted. Now anyone can visit -- for a fee. You drive through the grounds, and can get out, walk, take photos, when you see something that catches your eye. The highlight of our trip was roseate spoonsbills, and an otter fishing unperturbed for over 15 minutes in a pond while we watched.
