I have been to a lot of zoos, and I was not expecting much of this small-town zoo. But I was actually very impressed. It was beautifully landscaped with lots of waterfalls and fountains, and lots of shade, very important in Louisiana. The staff was friendly, and most of the animals seem perfectly happy. The exhibits are well designed, with lots of windows for viewing animals underwater and board walks for overhead viewing. All of the cat exhibits had glass panes for face-to-face encounters. We had a thrilling encounter with a huge, gorgeous white tiger. The lion exhibit was very unique, with a safari tent viewing area and a jeep in the exhibit. The jaguar exhibit was very overgrown, but that is excellent for a jungle cat. And we really enjoyed the acadian architecture in the Louisiana area. They do not yet have giraffes, elephants, or zebras, but I hear it's in the works. They are also going to have a boat ride. It is definitely worth the drive from Baton Rouge, and we will be back.
