Vaoto Lodge

Ofu

Wonderful little place in the middle of nowhere

629909944

It's not easy to get to, but if you take the time to visit Ofu (one of the smaller islands), the Vaoto Lodge is the place to stay. Quiet, serene and absolutely gorgeous. The hosts are inviting and pleasant, and provide terrific accommodations, considering they don't have a lot of visitors. Very comfortable, and it's right next door to the National Park Ranger Station

Going to Ofu and staying at Vaoto Lodge was wonderful. Deb and Ben are the most gracious hosts. They were so nice to talk to. They served delicious home-cooked meals for breakfast and dinner. The rooms at the lodge are comfortable, clean and have plenty of space. Room has a bathroom with shower (hot water), sink and toilet. No AC but room is well ventilated and gets a good breeze off the ocean, plus there's a fan in the room. I loved hearing the sound of the waves at night. The dining, common area is nice. The grounds are immaculate. Ben does a lot of gardening so there are trees and plants with flowers all over the place. I enjoyed walking around the grounds looking at all the gardens. Their beach right in front of the lodge is beautiful and you can snorkel right there. But a few feet away you'll have miles of beach at the national park. The coral and fish are so neat to see. Ben and Deb arranged rides for us to go to church in Ofu village and also to the trailhead of the Tumu Mountain trail. They were so helpful with tips on things to do. We went for a walk one day to Olesega, and another day to Sili, where we went snorkeling. We went several days to the beach in the national park. I'm trying to figure out when I can go back to Ofu and Vaoto Lodge. I already miss Deb, Ben, and their puppies, especially Marley.

We had a bit of a struggle getting over to Ofu because of big waves, so we had to stay in Tau to days. Deb arranged everything so we could do a home stay there, and really helped us out! When we finally got over to Ofu we had the best time at Vaoto Lodge. The place has great location right next to the most beautiful beach in the world. Ben and Deb are great hosts and make the most delicious meals. Hopefully we can go back to Ofu and Vaoto Lodge in the future!

This is actually a tough review to write. On the one hand, we want to encourage everyone to go to Ofu and stay at the Vaoto Lodge. Deb and Ben were gracious, friendly, and accommodating. Breakfast and dinners were always delicious. The grounds were immaculate. And the beach--omg--the beach. It is pristine. On the other hand, this needs to be an undisturbed and undeveloped area. Too much demand, too much traffic, more feet on the beach--and it will no longer be paradise. For now--it is almost Eden. Ben and Deb fight to protect it. The rooms are simple, clean, close to the beach, and entirely dependent on honesty, discretion, and trust. We loved this place. Go! Don't Go! (You have 2 main methods to get there: Samoan Air or a cargo boat. Both are adventures. Plan ahead. You might have to stay a week between transportation. It isn't a bad fate.)

Room tip: All the rooms seem to be the same. All one story. All small cabins with running water, bed, and fans.

Vaoto lodge has lovely grounds and gardens. The common/meal area is great. the location of the lodge is great. Our room was comfy and nice, good functional bathroom, hot water, plenty of space, good light, good ventilation, well screened against mosquitos, not packed with neighbours. the accomodation is not high end but it is comfortable. Fans rather than AC. Breakfast and dinner were very good.

Personally what I loved about the place is that it is family run so you build a relationship with Deb and Ben who run the place. They are perfect hosts welcoming into the beautiful space they have created. I found them to be both attentive and accommodating while also being very genuine and personal. I really appreciated that as you feel this is their unique space and you see them a lot.

Organising to travel to Ofu is hard in a number of ways, chiefly dealing with samoa airways, but it has the pay off of it being virtually empty of other tourists and totally unspoiled.
I emailed with Deb well in advance of our trip and she was really helpful.

I could rave on about how fantastic spending a week in Ofu is but i feel there is a blog that does it very well, reading it was largely the reason that i went. Google: x days in y Ofu
